If you can't close a gate by normal means, try typing CloseCurrentOblivionGate into console while in the Oblivion realm. Doing so should close the gate you are in and teleport you outside.
If it doesn't your game may be corrupt somehow. You might have to start over, otherwise you can just teleport outside by using the console.
player.moveto 1C462
This command will teleport you to the beggar in the Imperial City Market District.
Have you downloaded and installed the unofficial patches? They might help fix the problem, but the problem with your save may be permanent for your current playthrough.
That's the code that doesn't work for me :( Well, it worked on one of the non-storyline gates but only one and certainly not the storyline one I am stuck in now.
I will try the player teleport code next- thank you! Not encountered that one before. That said, by now I just want to start over as this has actually been for a few months on-and-off and its losing the game magic that keeps me interested in the storyline of the game. I hope it isn't the actual version of the game that is corrupt...
Yes I have, but they don't seem to have helped with the gates issue.
Thank you for your advice :) Much appreciated!
