You probably pressed tab on the character creation screen when inputting a name, which messes up the saving.

Simply go into the console, type:

player.setactorfullname "[Your character's name]" (With the quotes around the characters name). Then try to save.

If that doesn't work, make sure you are running on an administrator account on your PC, and run the game as an administrator. If it still doesn't work, make sure the Saves folder in "My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves (or something)" isn't checked to "Read Only" under Properties.

I am having the same issue. I've done everything including the read-only file thing. But sadly my computer keeps reverting the file back to read only. How can I fix that?

other than making sure your user account does have administrator rights i have no idea. I know that it happened to me, only have 1 profile on my pc and it did not have admin rights. I had to create another account with admin rights so I could give my Main account admin rights.

Windows 10 can have an issue with permissions, mine did. I have heard that running Steam as administrator works, it may but this is what I did to fix mine. I got this from another poster and somehow missed copying the user name, sorry.

I ran the following command on Windows 10 in order to bulk change, recursively, the permissions of everything in my Documents folder and was able to save for multiple games after doing so.

Launch a command prompt as administrator (right click > open as administrator)
Navigate to your documents folder (or whatever folder's contents you would like to change permissions on)
Run: cacls . /t /e /c /p HomeUsers:F

This runs the Change Access Control Lists command on the current directory (.), recursively (/t), edits instead of deleting the existing ACL (/e), continues on access denied errors (/c), adds the new permission (/p) to the user or group (HomeUsers), with Full Access (F).

I used a single name (George) My Account is set as Administrator on the system, all games are set to run as administrator.
I am the owner of all folders with full access.
All games are installed on a non-system SSD drive.
Running Win 10 Pro (C:\Users\papaw\Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves).
I have reinstalled the game 3Xs after completely removing all parts of Oblivion.
I have copies the ini file to (C:\Users\papaw\Documents\My Games\Oblivion).
The game also checks for the Video every time I start the game.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have Bitdefender installed on your system? If you do, open Bitdefender and go to "Notifications" (it will be a "bell" icon on the left side.) It will take you to list of applications that might be blocked by the anti-virus software. Find the "Application access blocked" in the date and time you tried saving the game. It will give a notice that "The application "such and such.exe" attempted to change a file in a protected folder ..." If the "such and such.exe" is your Oblivion directory, then click on the "View application" button. It will show the application's name and chect to see if the slider is on "Blocked." Click on the slider to change it to "Allowed" and your game should save files as normal. On other anti-virus programs (such as Windows Defender) you may have to place the program on an exemption listing.

By the Nine it worked

None of it helped with me. I have tried 1) in the beginning at character creation it was not making
a saves folder. So I created a saves file my documents>my games>oblivion, this didn't work at first, then suddenly I was able to save my game for some reason after my cat accidentally hit my tower's power button and shut my computer off. When I reloaded the game, I was able to save my game, miraculously!! But, when I was done playing I shut down the computer and came back to play later that night and it wouldn't save again. 2) tried editing the folder to remove the check for read only then clicked apply & confirmed that I wanted to make this change, upon going back into that folder it reverts back to checked every time. I tried another suggestion about putting the folder on your desktop then changing the check, and applying. This still did not work it reverted back. 3) tried entering command tilde then typing player.setactorfullname Alyssa (then hitting return and exiting tilde) and saving game. This did not work. Tried typing it, then exiting game, coming back and saving still did not work either. Also tried player.SetActorFullName Alyssa just in case if it was case sensitive, nada. (commands are not supposed to be case sensitive anyway) 4) tried doing what bethesda told me to do: besides the above mentioned, they also said to type in command: save filename (name of file name you want to make, press return then exit tilde) so I typed save Alyssa. It said it was saved. But this did nothing also. 4) running as administrator from desktop game icon, and also oblivion and oblivion launcher in the steamapps folder. 5) Tried deleting the oblivion ini files and reloading game.6) Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game twice. 7) No mods are being used. 8) I never used alt-tab at character creation, or shift-tab, or even while I was able to actually play for a while and it had saved that one time. I don't need to alt-tab out of the game for any reason. If I need to look something up, I use my tablet which is not connected to my computer or game in any way. So the option of possibly hitting tab while naming my character is invalid for me. It didnt happen. I remade my character numerous times due to the not saving, and just did not hit tab at all, except after my character was made because we need to use tab for inventory access.9) Also tried hittign f5 which is supposed to be quicksave, and this didnt work. 10) also tried another suggestion by Bethesda where they said to access Steam Library to right click on Oblivion game, select Local Files then Verify Integrity of Files. I did this and it was fine, no issues. Because none of their suggestions have been working they want to see my dxdiag file, so I sent it, waiting to hear an answer. But in the meantime....Any suggestions would be helpful, because I am not getting anywhere with tech forums, steam forums, redditt or any other google searched forums on how to fix saving game issue. Bethesda is saying the same thing everyone else is, and obviously cant tell me how to fix it either. Thanks!!
