Play game for first time in Vanilla or wait for Skyblivion?
This is my first time trying out Oblivion.

I was wondering if i should wait for Skyblivion and play the game first time in that or play vanilla first. Considering the vanilla is so outdated..?

Thanks!!

vanilla, easily. doesn't matter if it's outdated it's still a good game. also you'll probably be like 85 years old when skyblivion finally releases

they quite literally announced that it will be released in 2025..

Like with adding any mods it's always advised to play any Bethesda game Vanilla first, so you get to know what you would want to change or update. Most Mods are tributes to the game or an improvement. If you've never played the original you won't have anything to compare it to.
The stories in Skyblivion will be different they may be better but who knows, there are quests and stories in Oblivion that are unique and should be experienced first hand in an almost Vanilla game.

So I'd recommend you play Oblivion while awaiting Skyblivion how ever long it takes. I'd also wait getting Skyblivion till it's been updated / patched a couple of times.

I'd argue to wait. 2025 is relatively close compared to when this game first released. I think there's no wrong answer either way - you will without a doubt enjoy the world and storytelling - if Skyblivion is as good as it seems (risk)- be aware if the mod is half a buggy as the game at first release we're in for a ride. The first play through will mark a distinct before and after in your gaming timeline however I would probably opt for making that experience even more digestible if you struggle to immerse yourself into an older generation world. There's an element of spoiling your future self if you play now.

Go with vanilla. The repaint of it over skyrim mechanics will remove a lot of the jank and charm from the original oblivion.

Skyrim is starting to be equally outdated as well
But the stories, side quests and atmosphere do still stand out even in vanilla, if you don't mind the gameplay it's going to be good.
Vanilla.

As if skyrim isn't outdated.
Besides, by playing a skyrim mod you're not playing oblivion, there's only one real choice

Play Oblivion first. Make sure to install the Unofficial Patch. if you don't, then there's no point playing - you'll encounter many bugs, unfinishable quests and risk losing your save file to corruption.

Can I still download and install that patch even if I’ve completed a lot of the quests?

Yes, though the person you're responding to is grossly exaggerating. I played for hundreds and hundreds of hours on PS3 before I had a computer that could run Oblivion. Did just about every quest vanilla before ever getting into modding. Does vanilla have bugs? Sure. Are most of them things you'll never encounter unless you purposely try to? Yes.

I do recommend the unofficial patch, I use it and think people should for a few reasons. But the game is perfectly playable vanilla too.

Absolutely play the vanilla game. It has great charm which I'm sure the Skyblivion one will ruin. Anything re-done is almost always worse like ever single movie they re-made in history. I see no reason for Skyblivion at all. Oblivion is a perfect gem right now. Don't mess with perfection.

And those saying Skyblivion will be out in 2025? They probably said 2024 and 2023 and 2022 etc etc in past years. When does a game ever come out when they announce it will be out? And even when it comes out it will be full of bugs like any other game and drive people crazy.

If anything - you gotta play the original just to hear Patrick Stewart set the stage for you - since I forget if there where any concerns/issues with bringing all of the OG audio/music over.

Also going to use this thread to shamelessly advertise Young Scrolls for those who never heard of them (uses ES dialogue to make music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnffv5aNqgw

At the very least, you should try it, I would highly recommend at the very least grabbing the Unofficial Oblivion and Shivering Isles patches from Nexus.
