Modding (tweaking) Item Values
What's the best way to modify items' values? I don't want to add or remove any items, just want to make things like diamonds and pearls more valuable and worth actually picking up. Tried to edit the main Oblivion file in the Construction Set and when I tried to save my changes, it wouldn't let me, it tried to get me to save it as a new file altogether. Any suggestions?

Do I have to make a whole new ESP file in order to do something as simple as just changing gold values of base-game items?

Open either the main Oblivion.esm or any of the DLC esm files, but don't set them as active. You do not want to edit the main files.

Then save as a file name you specify and it will create an ESP file that you can use for your modding purposes. That ESP will be a duplicate of the game files you specified and uses the ESM file as the master file.

That is the safest way to do it without damaging the game files. You are basically creating your own mod that way. That is the way modding is designed to work.

TES4Edit is best for this. Highlight the item you want to edit and right click. Pick copy as override into. In the next box that pops up pick new. Type in a new name for the esp. Then edit the item all you want on the override you just created.

Thanks for the info guys. I've dabbled in modding before, but never in a TES game, and nothing too drastic. I'll see what I can whip together.
