The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Should I buy Oblivion or Morrowind
Just looking for the better of the two for long term play.

Get both. Problem solved. If you’ve played neither, you can’t know what you’d prefer. People have their opinions; doesn’t mean though you’ll feel the same.
Just start with Morrowind and then play Oblivion. That's what I did, over 20 years ago. And that said, these games are dated, so bear that in mind.

In my opinion, they are both better than anything new that's been offered in the genre.

Have fun. :steamhappy:
imo Morrowind is too old, and the combat is terrible. Get Oblivion, it's easier to get into.
Also check out dread delusion!
Both offer pretty long base game campaigns, and both games can be further extended beyond that with modding as well. Which one may be better for you is highly dependent on you though. Both are older games but Morrowind is from the era before Bethesda assumed all players were complete morons. It doesn't hold your hand and it will let you mess up (it will at least tell you that you messed up and doomed the world though, and advises you to reload from before the dumb you did but it also won't make you reload and doesn't protect every vaguely important NPC with an essential status).

Morrowind's base game did take me longer to get through than Oblivion's did, but I also ended up replaying Oblivion a lot more so it gave me more total hours played in the long run. Oblivion is much easier to get into, especially if you aren't used to older games and their delightfully jank limitations, plus the Oblivion modding community seems to be a bit more robust (but im not big into modding after arguing with specifically Morrowind about it back in the day, so I could be wrong there).
After checking out your library and the games you've put 1000's of hours in vs the ones that you've barely played. I doubt you'd like either game. Elder Scrolls Online, might be more your thing.

If you want a game that doesn't crash get morrowind. If you want a game that crashes get oblivion.

That is the most appalling and inaccurate exaggerated distortion of the truth that I have ever read. Both games crash occasionally. I gave up on Morrowind a very long time ago for a variety of reasons, and I will never bother with it again. Oblivion, on the other hand, I still play regularly. Crashes only occur rarely, about the average frequency compared to my wide variety of games in my library. With over 1600 hours in Oblivion over three versions of Windows, I have crashed a handful of times. I do not recall the last time it was so long ago.

Possibly, and this is only a supposition the above criticism of Oblivion stability is based on a modded game where one, or more, of the mods is unstable or clashes with another mod. This can happen with some (few) mods.

To every problem there is a simple solution - and it's wrong. Apply this old saying to questions and answers.

Edit: I forgot to ask how you know that this answers your question? Do you have enough experience with both games to be able to say that one crashes and the other doesn't? If yes, you wouldn't have to ask the question. If no, you couldn't judge the correctness of the "answer". It's not, by the way.

Why don't you have a steam profile picture is the real question.

Just looking for the better of the two for long term play.

Both are great games and completely different experiences. Morrowind has more freedom and it's a truly open ended game where you can play as you want, go where you want, and the game never holds your hand. It's amazing in the amount of freedom you have, something you never see in modern games anymore, but at the same time is very difficult to get into for casual gamers and new players who don't have the patience.

Oblivion is a much easier and more linear game. It still has freedom but it's way more structured and stream lined than Morrowind. I could never get into Morrowind or appreciate it until I completed Oblivion and then I went back and played Morrowind. Your experience may vary and if you're a younger individual maybe you won't be able to get into the old school graphics of Morrowind, but if you can it's worth to explore.

Skyrim is even more streamlined than Oblivion, has better graphics, and is the game everyone can get into. The newer the game the more mainstream it became and it became much easier to play, but it also lost the charm and the freedom the older games had.

Hope this helps.
Morrowind has a bigger map but it's also emptier and has less unique locations
Oblivion has very beautiful locations and there is something to do everywhere
Morrowind isn't voice acted it has tons of text dialog which is often way too long imho
Oblivion is voice acted but the acting isn't anything amazing
Morrowind uses hit chance like dungeon crawlers instead of hitboxes like Oblivion and Skyrim
Oblivion has amazing questlines(best in the series) while Morrowind shines in exploration
Yes.

Oblivion has fast travel, Morrowind has complicated networks of silt striders, mages guild teleport, and the complex warrens of Vivec City.
Morrowind, you actually need a compass and landmark navigation.
Oblivion, you'll fast travel to cities, and previously visited places, but most places are reached initially by jogging in a straight line to where you want to go.
Morrowind has Levitate and Jump because there's no safety rails on magic and that's fine.
Oblivion has magicka regen and spells you can actually afford to cast. No jump or levitate.

Both games are cheap, very fun, and have basically endless mods for eternal replay value and I highly recommend both.
thanks peoples I bought both of them :steamhappy:
