Oblivion shuts off my PC
Hello,

Whenever I'm playing oblivion, my PC just shuts down completly (PC isn't even starting up until i plug off PSU and plug it on again).

Has anyone had the same kind of problem? The game is running smooth and dandy, but after few mins my PC acts like it just died of natural causes

my bet would be either overheating or bad power supply

I looked up temperatures and everything is okay, this game barely does any heavy load on my PC.
PSU is good too, this is only game that does that and it just drives me crazy :steamsalty:
Guess I have to dig deeper

if it is not hardware, then reinstall graphic card driver.

uninstall current driver. use DDU.
reboot.
CLEAN install current driver.
reboot.
try game again.

usually if you are missing an old library, the game crashes with an error msg.

might check windows event viewer on the rare chance an event was logged before the power off.

Sounds like PSU issue to me. Or atleast a power issue somewhere.

if the Temps are fine then its not shutting down to protect itself that way, so if your using a monitor such as CPUID's HWmonitor, it should have the voltages as well. Keep an eye on those too.

been there before, with Skyrim rather than oblivion. it didnt power off, but did restart and at random intervals while on the game - the problem was the PSU, even though other games ran just fine.

My bet, PSU is failing. If you've got an old PSU lying about in a previous PC, check the 12V rail and see if it gives out around the same Watts, and try that.
Would atleast confirm, or rule out, the PSU as cause

@OP, It is better not to play Oblivion until you replace the power supply since you can kill your HDDs, etc. You PSU is dying, probably

@OP, do yourself a favor and check voltages with HWmonitor mentioned above.
if the difference between "expected" voltage and "delivered" voltage is greater than 10%, replace your PSU as soon as possible. (load some benchmark app and keep HWmonitor on top to monitor voltages while your PC is under load)

if the difference is smaller than 5%, plug your PC in a different wall socket and see if the problem persists (might have to do with PFC)

I'll try that, thanks for suggestion.
Now that i read all of that, I think it actually might be PSU and now I'm just afraid lmao

measuring is knowing.
you will only know that for certain after you check it.

its not your hard ware. its direct x 9. Some newer cards mainly AMD cards and cpus do not like direct x 9 games. and will black screen restart because of it.

This happened with my other card.. but in a slightly different way.... If I tried to stream my PC would restart. If I played a game with out streaming it didn't..... Got a new graphics card....an bobs ya uncle.. My m8 who builds PC'S gave his expert opinion an said the card was on it's way out.

I'm thankfull for all advices I got here.
I'll try with PSU when i get a chance, so far I don't have any spare so I'll do it in near future :)

^you know you could test your current PSU before aquiring a new one, dont you?
Sasquatch Jul 20, 2021 @ 7:22am
Yeah, but after everything I've read I have to seriously think about new PSU, current one is about 6-7yrs old
I was watching voltage when playing other games and everything was looking fine, although I was always afwul when it comes to electricity stuff

if you have a decent power supply, it should last as long as the rest of your PC.
i've had a Corsair RM650x for over 7y, then bought a new PC and a new power supply (same model)
