The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Martin and Jauffre as followers
So I knew that you can get Martin easily as follower after saving him and just do other things besides the main quest. What I did not know was that you seem to get both Martin and Jauffre as followers after Weynon Priority gets attacks and Jauffre says you need to go that Blade fortress. So I am not sure how long this will go without bugs but so far both of them follow me (also on fast travel) as long as I skip continuing the main quest.
Seems like a funny oversight in the game.
(also experience seems to be given to me because of I have the Oblivion XP mod installed) :-)

I had them as followers for a while and if you avoid visiting the Cloud Ruler Temple they will follow you indefinitely. Essential followers are useful because if you lose them just fast travelling to another city once or twice will make them spawn next to you at the city gate. The biggest threat to essential followers is lava in the Oblivion realm because they can easily fall off narrow bridges in to lava and there is no way to rescue them or make them spawn elsewhere. If you have followers when ascending the Sigil tower stay close to them, save a lot and do regular head counts.

Active Inventory spell allows you to access the inventory of followers and give them weapons, armour and scrolls. If you transfer summon scrolls to a followers inventory they will use them when you encounter an enemy. I spent a long time with the Jemane Brothers as followers because I never took them back to Weatherleah so I could command them to follow and wait on hundreds of quests. They got me out of some very tough situations until I released them from servitude and took them to Weatherleah.

As a massive fan of Wilburgur (check him out on Youtube) I would say almost indefinitely. He certainly managed a very long series with the both of them following him, mods and all.

Thanks for tips. That thing with the summoning scrolls is absolutely brilliant. :)

It's great for very dangerous areas but the downside is followers don't seem to have a distinction between enemy types so will automatically use a summon scroll as soon as they detect an enemy. Suddenly I have two Frost Atronachs to take care of a mudcrab.
