The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Why is my FPS so bad?
I started this game up the other day and I was getting 20 and under FPS in the Imperial marketplace. I know my PC is pretty bad but that is ridiculous. I used to get a waaaay better framerate in this game and I don't know what has changed. I had all the shadows turned off when I last opened the game. I have low shadows turned on on Skyrim and I usually get 50 and above in that game. Does anyone know the reason for my terrible FPS or any solutions?

My Specs:

Operating System: Windows 10
Processor: Quad Core 2.30 GHz (more like 2.7 with AMD Turbo Core)
RAM: 8.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
Graphics Adapter: AMD Radeon HD 7660G

Thanks in advance.

I have a worst computer than you and I get better framerate than you. However, sometimes Oblivion likes to be horribly optimized and my framerate plummets to literally under 10. I recently had a framerate equivalent of a brush with death. Was doing SI, in Xaselm. Then I enter the Experimenting Chamber portion of the dungeon... and... I don't have an FPS counter on my screen but I swear it was like getting 0.5 frames per second. It was unbearable. Restarting my game seems to have fixed it though.

Are you using any mods?

You should probably be using OBSE and Stutter Remover if you are not.

Do you have Enhanced Camera installed?

How many NPCs were around? A lot of them like to hang out in the market intersection and looking at all of them can cut the framerates of pcs with low single-core performance.

I was in the marketplace and a lot of NPCs were around when i was getting 20 fps.

When I was getting 20 fps i was using a few mods. I'm almost sure I was using the stutter remover already. I forget what OBSE is but it sounds really familiar so I probably had it installed.

I keep saying "When I was getting 20 fps" because this was few months ago now and since then I've factory reset my PC and I haven't installed Oblivion or any mods again yet.

Sounds like it was a driver issue. It's fine, AMD is known for it's terrible drivers. You're better off with an NVIDIA card. I mean, I can run my game perfectly OK. Sometimes the game likes to do stuff to me like what happened at Xaselm (although not to that extent, that was a first-timer for me, screen changing a frame every 2 seconds practically).

Mods like Enhanced Vegetation, Oblivion Stutter Remover, Low-Poly Grasses and Shorter Grass all help improve framerate. I would advise that you use the Unofficial Patches (it's practically a mandatory thing these days, you CAN'T play the game without them). Try to avoid mods that would reduce framerate such as Shademe or Oblivion Reloaded. Despite how great OR is, I don't think your computer could handle it.

I dunno, try re-installing Oblivion, play around in the vanilla game and then try installing some mods if the issue is corrected. If it's still there, try installing some of those performance mods, in addition to the Unofficial Patches.

Also give us your VRAM, that might be the issue. My computer is the embodiment of terrible. 1.5 GHz AMD processor with Radeon HD Graphics. I have a measly 512 MB of VRAM. Not sure how much straight-up RAM I have though, I imagine it isn't much.

I also recommend unparking your cores. Can do wonders for your performance. It's the main reason I'm able to even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ play a game.

I'm gonna be plain honest with you. The AMD A10-4600M is not a good processor. A 2.3 GHz Piledriver

piledriver isn't really a top-notch architecture yeah, but he's more hampered by the speed of the A10, rather than the architecture

and come to think of it, the A10 is kaveri or godavari anyway, which are actually better than piledriver clock-for-clock

the A10 still isn't a shining example of kaveri/godavari, that title belongs to the athlon, which is priced appropriately for the performance

Not the A10-4600M, it's an earlier generation "Trinity" chip, which used Piledriver and VLIW4 instead of Steamroller/Excavator and GCN, Kaveri and Godavari are years newer ;)

man, i keep getting schooled

that is behind the times

What could they do?

that could be said for AMD as a whole post athlon 64

the radeon division not inclusive in that statement

though what really puzzles me is what the root cause of them being behind-the-times is, whether it's lacking intel's RnD budget, or otherwise

I use mods and I don't get much lag at all. I use OBSE and Stutter remover and that has really improved my game. Even without mods, you'll still lag, because of how poorly optimized Oblivion is. Plus, it's a really old game "2009"

I tried to install enhanced camera, but for some reason, Oblivion doesn't like to have it work. I installed it correctly, but no changes for first-person mode. I guess it's for the best since I'm on a Hp laptop, that lags on "HIGH" quality games. I can run Oblivion on the highest settings and not much lag. Suprisingly.

For me, Enhanced Camera causes an undue amount of frame drops in internal instances even with every other optimizer installed. It's ludicrous and to be honest really obnoxious. In Ayleid ruins, the game becomes unplayable. It turns out I might not be the only one who suffers from these problems too.

So that's why I ask everyone who has FPS issues if they have Enhanced Camera installed.

Woah. All these responses in one day to a discussion thats months old.

I have a laptop so I don't think my graphics card is in for an upgrade anytime soon. And if I had the money to buy a graphics card for a desktop I would have just saved up and bought a new PC by now.

I'm pretty sure I had all of my cores unparked at the time of posting this but they aren't anymore because of the factory reset. I'll unpark them before I try playing Oblivion again because I'm about to have to unpark them to get a ok framerate in Skyrim.

Yeah, I know my PC is pretty garbage. :/

You should lower your game's resolution (improves massively), lower your distance sliders to a minimum, disable tree canopy shadows and use Bloom lighting.

I really hate how it looks to play at resolutions lower than native so I don't think its really worth to me especially considering I used to be able to get a good fps at native. My resolution isn't even a full 1080p anyway (1366 x 768 I think) so I don't think it would make as much of a difference for me. I already had tree canopy shadows turned off but I will try using bloom next time, thanks.

i used to have the same frame-tanking issue with enhanced camera, but it doesn't seem to be the same for OR's version of the plugin

have you used OR's version, and if so, has it had the same problem in your experience?

I get 20-30 frames normal so don't complain please
