The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The most unfair thing in the TES IV: Oblivion
I am playing as regular citizen, good breton cleric girl who tries to help everyone and doesnt commit crimes. And for sure, I desire to enter Arcane Univercity to create more powerful healing and buffing spells. But these recommendations... I somehow managed to obtain the Seer's Stone without hurting Kalthar, helped Erthor to take over his fears and healed him until he defeated all zombies, found J'skar by myself withtout dealing with Volanaro. But to receive one last recommendation, from Cheydinhal, I just have no other options but stealing items from mage's desk, that is unacceptable. No Chironasium for lawful breton girl...

Sometimes it’s about the greater good…

I feel your pain, theft is something I do not want to do, but, here, there is no option, you need that Chironasium for future Good and to progress to other quests of the "utmost" importance. :lunar2020thinkingtiger: If it hurts too much to see that little theft statistic then use the console to erase it. (I do :lunar2019smilingpig:) However, I draw the line at murder, so, the Dark Brotherhood quests will always be taboo for me.

What exactly prevents you from diving down and picking up the ring? All you need is a little time for diving down, and then something to help you carry the weight back up. Spells, potions, scrolls - the choice is yours.

It is not the ring which is the problem, it is the Soul Gems! - Two Black Soul Gems. Their very nature, imo, makes "stealing" them and turning them in, a good not a bad action.

My reply was about the Cheydinhal recommendation quest (see OP). I'm not aware that "stealing items from the mage's desk" (soul gems in particular) is required to get this recommendation.

If you think you can graduate from this school without robbing mages desk...

It's not even stealing them. It's after falcar tried to get you killed, got another apprentice killed, and then ran away. The mages guild want you to check out his desk to see if there's evidence where he went.

Not recognizing the right thing to do in this situation is probably indicative that your character is not quite grasping this whole "right vs wrong" concept. As others have pointed out, you're confiscating items not permitted within the guild and turning them in. It shouldn't be labeled as theft and the Unofficial Oblivion Patch should fix it if it is.

This is not a conundrum. Black soul gems are used to capture human souls, so shedding light on their existence/Falcar's malicious nature could not be any more "the right thing to do" here. Altruism =/= Good.
Taking the black soul gems is the key to getting that recommendation from Cheydinhal. Without those soul gems you can't get into the university.

Like I said earlier, take them, turn them in to get your recommendation and then use the console to remove the two theft points. They should not be there anyway - The Mage's guild does not welcome known criminals.

They can be used to capture human soulds. These ones were never used to capture human souls. Falcar is just a scientist, who doesn't appreciate restrictions of any magical knowledge. Deetsan is certainly wrong while asking me to search for papers in Falcar's desk. Would your co-worker of higher rank ask you to look in your boss' desk for papers, while he is absent? This is not right thing to do.

I have read that Unofficial Oblivion Patch could fix it, but if I start to install mods, why I couldnt just install one to complete all quests with one button or to kill all baddies without getting my hands dirty? First installed mod will ruin it all.

It is becaue Mages Guild is not a good place. It is just usual work with lots of people who have their own interest. But it is kinda unfair for players that you have to do crime to even enter that job.

Well.. i got that ring! I am actually carriying it on my finger despite I left Cheydinhal long ago. How this helps me to get recommendations?
Wai Jul 4, 2023 @ 2:29pm
You have to turn the ring into Deetsan. Deetsan will tell you to drop the ring anywhere, it is of no importance. Falcar is gone. She asks you to look to see if he has left a draft recommendation. You find two black soul gems. Return these to Deetsan for the recommendation. The mage's guild does not approve of trapping human souls.

The mage guild is a good place and, eventually you will have to fight, and defeat, a nasty character and become the Arch mage yourself.
