A good config helps. I used a very popular Deck Controller Layout by "airloaf" or something similar. He developed a nice quick save and load on the left trackpad, and enabled gyro for aiming.
I rebound the number keys (hotkeys) to the D-Pad for quick weapon swapping. Left Bow, Right Sword, Up Fire magic, Down Heal magic. Mapped L5 to "torch".
Then I switched gyro controls from the right trackpad, to "hold on R2", and swapped jump and "action" back around again.
Most of the "tediousness" was eliminated. About like playing Breath of the Wild, even has the red skies when you level up and run across an Oblivion Gate.
And yes, I've spent at least an hour for making the layout that fits me the best, with gyro, hotkeys on touch menu on the left touchpad, etc... It's better than on PC now. :D
