Blackthorn Castle Training Room.
Probably a dumb question, but, can your character use the dummy, punch bag and target to improve his/her skills? (I am particularly interested in hand to hand using the punch bag or dummy). Or, is the only actual character skill training achieved by sparing with the NPC trainer, using swords or daggers?

Nuh, gotta hit a valid target. Sparring Orc works, or when you get sick of his endless blocking just find/conjure a Zombie / Headless Zombie. Their horrible Agility makes them stagger, a lot, and you can punch them dozens upon dozens of times. They can't block you, and the slow, telegraphed attacks are trivial to weave in and out of, pretty solid amount of HP for their cost.
You get skill EXP per hit, regardless of damage.

In Arena of Imperial City, there's 2 people fist fighting. You can watch them do that and it will boost your Hand to Hand Skill

Darn,:steamsad:

Not really worth bothering with the Training Room then.

I will just have to continue punching crabs. :steambored: (I don't like zombie's and avoid them when I can - shock 'em out of existence, with a shock/soul trap spell :steamhappy:, when I can't).

the deepscorn hollow prisoner is the perfect living training dummy to improve skills. He cannot die and he will not report a crime.

Ah, that sounds useful, thank you. I have Deepscorn Hollow, but I have not upgraded. I will look into that - I have enough money to do it.

Hand to hand, with sneak has been working pretty well for me right now - one hit = x6 if it is a kill and I get most crabs, goblins, wolves and rats that way - but, I know it won't last indefinitely. If I fail on the one hit, I just zap 'em with my shock+soul trap so it's win win. :)

Ouch ! It does work, but, every hit is an assault. And, counted assault or not, it feels wrong. Back to the drawing board.
use the mod i suggested

Thank you for the suggestion, but, I prefer not to use mods for a couple of reasons.

I have had some bad previous experiences with mods. Yes, I do realise that a lot of players of this and other games use them and some say that they are essential. For now, my character is developing quite well.

If the Blackthorn Training Room, or any other facility, was set up to train more skills then I would be happy to use that mechanic, which was why I asked. It would be part of the game as designed.

I don't want to alter my gaming experience by changing the game in a way which would change the dynamics of the game as designed.

Just a personal quirk. What ever works for each player is the right way to play the game. :)

But, I don't.

(One of my aims is to play through with no murders and only unavoidable assaults, prison days and thefts. So far, after loading the save prior to buying that room, I have 4 thefts, one assault, one day of incarceration and no murders @ level four with rep of 31. It's a many years since I played Morrowind so I don't remember my stats, but I played that in a similar way for an extra challenge.)
