The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Abandoned forts across Cyrodill
I've been playing a bit of Oblivion now and I have to ask one thing. Why most of the forts are in a such poor state? Wouldn't it be better for Bethesda to put some populated, well-armed and equipped forts on land? It's just defficult to look at them and not to wonder - if it is the seat of the Empire then why roads and the lands aren't guarded properly? And overall populated outside the cities is extremly small. I had to install some mods that brought more npc's in the game so the game wouldn't look so empty.

The answer to most of your questions - technical limitations in 2006. AT that time TESIV was a jewel of the crown in the gaming world, and a benchmark in itself. Although Bethesda did not really progress much in the next decade, as in how similar all their games have become due to this engine that is now in it's third decade of life. Be it Oblivion or Fallout 4, the longtime players know the feeling, features and limitations of the engine in and out by now.

Lorewise I would argue that it is after all the end of an era, the gates are opening, the king is dead, kingdom is in turmoil. Also the Ayleid ruins are supposed to be empty and there's a bunch of them in Cyrodiil.

I guess you're right, from the modern perspective everthing from 10+ years ago looks a bit underdeveloped.

well that is deep, it will take me a while to watch it through. I uderstand all he does is criticizing the game from the techinical point of view?

One of my loading screens talks about the forts. It said in the early days of the empire they were needed to defend the land, but now that the empire is well established they're not necessary anymore and fell into disrepair.
