It's a challenge and it's an epic conclusion to the game. It struck me with awe the first time I played it and it still does to this day.
Were you playing with mods or console commnd to turn essential off? Because Martin is an essential character, he can't die.
Actually during the final main quest Martin's essential status is turned off and him dying causes you to be forced to reload the last save.
He can in the Battle of Bruma, and the Battle of the Imperial City. I know this because, the first time I played through both of these battles, I killed him, (just to see what happens). He can only be killed during these two battles, and if he is killed, a little text window opens saying something like "Martin is dead, all hope is now lost...".
In the Battle of Bruma, if you leave the battlefield, he'll be killed in 15 seconds. I suppose that this is just a balancing factor to make the playable character not mess around and to also provide a challenge...
(I agree, fighting hordes of Daedroth, Xivali, and Dremora was a lot more challenging than killing Alduin, which is really strange when you think about it, but eh.)
Oblivion never dies! so yes a spoiler xd.
And oblivion is way more difficult than skyrim, (to mutch to be honest) almost impossible to end the game, in highest difficulty without reflect damage/reflect spell/resist magic, enchanted armor.
I honestly didn't find Oblivion's ending that difficult, and I finished it on the PS3.
In witch difficulty? because i'm level 34, i have like 90%+ resist magic, 50/60% reflect spell, 78% reflect damage, 35% resist normal weapons.
And my main weapon is Umber (??) 33 damage, and is useless, my only way is summon and defend.
(highest difficulty)
That's probably why. I played on normal. I'm not uber leet like you guys.
In normal, the first levels are a nightmare in dungeons.
Thats why i "hate" to explore in oblivion, expecially in the first 50 hours, it was a pain in the a**, skyrim was more balanced (some people may say easy, i dont xd) but the world leveling system needs to end.
I cant wait to see what TES6 is about, probably out of tamriel, because of TESonline
That would be a demanding game to run
Really? I love exploring in Oblivion, because this game feels so much more ambient than Skyrim, and it's trickier to wander around, derping about and massacring just about everything you see. I feel that Skyrim was too easy in that respect, and I really liked the early challenge that Oblivion posed. Moreover, a lot of enemies that you encounter early on aren't that tough, and it wouldn't surprise me if some dungeons are catered for newer characters. Vilverin, for instance, just outside the Imperial City Sewer exit is one of the easiest dungeons to clear, and it has some rather nice loot as well.
One thing I will admit is that I do find the Oblivion/Cyrodillic wilderness petrifying compared to Skyrim's. The dense foliage and thick forests just about everywhere compared to Skyrim's elevated, open plains makes it impossible to see anything, and as soon as you step outside the gates of a city, you get attacked. The constant "You cannot fast travel when enemies are nearby..." also doesn't help!
I'd quite like a new TES game that covers other regions of Nirn, such as Atmora, Aldmeris, and the other large continents. All we've ever really seen of Nirn is Tamriel, so it would be really cool to look at other areas of the planet!
I actually will agree that Oblivion is more atmospheric than Skyrim... but to be honest, I also think it's more atmospheric than Morrowind.
Yes, I have controversial opinions :D
