Best Sword and Shield in the game (Including all DLC)
Currently, I have a Daedric Sheild, Umbra, the Golden Saint armor and helmet. Both armor gives me about 70 to 80(If I repair them to 125%) Repairing Umbra boosts it up, giving it 30 points of damage. I'd like to keep Umbra, so I can charge my (new) single handed sword. I am currently level 30, and completed The Nine DLC quest. Im using Dawn/Duskfang as an alternate to Umbra, when it is fully charged.

Madness and the Amber seems to be the best thus far if you craft them when you are above lvl 23

The best low level sword is the Honorblade of Chorrol. It is an Ebony level sword with high health. You can get it from doing three quests starting in the inn in Chorrol.

The weapon with the highest base damage in the game can be obtained by killing the NPC named Umbra, who is is Vindasel, which you already have.

Umbra may have the highest base damage in the game, but there are still several swords that are better because their enchantment damage will surpass the base damage of Umbra, such as Dawnfang/Duskfang from the Shivering Isles and a few artifact weapons. Then there are many enchanted Ebony and Daedric weapons that will do more damage than Umbra with their enchantments active.

The best shield in the game is obtained by completing the quest for the first sword I mentioned, the Honorblade of Chorrol. Returning the Honorblade to the castle will earn you the reward the Escutcheon on Chorrol. It is a leveled Ebony shield with very high reflect damage, but it is best to wait to return the Honorblade of Chorrol at level 25, when the Escucheon will be at its highest level.

Best overall sword in the game is Goldbrand. The damage is near the top, but coupled with its fire enchantment, probably has the highest DPS of any drop/reward weapon. You can make a better weapon with a sigil stone on a daedric sword, but not by much. But I found constantly recharging Goldbrand to be an annoyance, so I just used a straight daedric longsword. It was slower hacking the enemies down, but worth the convenience of not having to refill it after every fight.

Also, the Bannered Mare is in Whiterun, not Chorrol! :-)

He probably means the Gray Mare.

How is the Honorblade "the best low level sword". It does 23 damage (base). Umbra does 28. Both are obtainable at level 1, and Umbra doesn't even require a quest to get it.

Because at low levels your damage is capped because of your blade skill, so you won't get the full damage rating of either sword and at low levels the damage depending on what blade skill you start at makes both swords pretty close damage wise. Umbra does have more base damage, but by only a couple points.

The problem is you will not have the Armorer skill or gold to repair Umbra consistantly or at all. It will be very expensive keeping it at top damage because of its cost to repair, unlike the Honorblade of Chorrol which you can easily repair yourself without cost.

Since you are paying for Umbra to be repaired, you are not raising your own armorer skill, while with the Honorblade of Chorrol you have a high damage sword with high health that you can repair yourself and raise your armorer skill.

If you want to run around with Umbra at level 1, that is cool, but it is not very efficient imo, especially if you want to save money to buy a house and a horse asap, but I guess it depends on your playstyle.
