Crash upon launch (Possible Fix*)
*Its a possible fix because it solves half the problem, the other half is purely annoyance. The fix is that when you launch the game and see the screen with data files and options, choose to run the game in windowed mode. it will get you to the main menu with New Game and Load but in a small window. You can change the resolution to your choosing and the game will run just fine if you dont mind it being in a window.

This has been happening to me for a while now and ive been looking up other discussions on this problem, though none have yeilded results.

Ive heard of the dreaded "Oblivion.ini" file and ive searched for it, only to not find it at all. Apparently when you start the game its supposed to create a .ini file? im not sure but people say you have to delete it which i obviously cant so thats not the problem.

I have NO MODS whatsoever, dont even have Nexus downloaded so there is no mod conflicting with the launch.

What i do own is the GOTY edition so all the Bethesda made add-ons are present. I have tried both setting them all to not load except for the oblivion master file and launching the game with all of them loaded, still no game launch.

I have also just manually searched up all oblivion type files and deleted them myself, getting rid of the entire thing and reinstalling it... three times now.

So im at a loss here, does anyone know whats happening? Is it some really small thing i overlooked and ill facepalm over hearing it? Sorry about the long desc. but i wanted to get all the info ive gathered on here so get as accurate fixes and i can get. Thanks <3 :steamsalty::steamsalty::steamsalty:

I'm pretty sure the crash upon launch is a compatibility issue first and foremost, or at least that's what I recall reading. It's a common thing on later OS's / powerful computers. At the very least, you can assign admin privileges to it, compatibility mode in XP, and fiddle with the colour mode(not so much that, it's not that old). If you don't have the oblivion.ini, that's not the issue at all. It's most likely something to do with compatibility with your computer, assuming you have nothing external that's messing with it.

I have this issue every time I reinstall Oblivion and I honestly forget it everytime. I think it's quite a small thing, too.

So i went into the files and found the actual application and set it to be only run by an administrator but the same crash happened. what can i do to fix the compatibility issue?

this is a complete new issue to me so i have no idea what to look for or what to search

EDIT: I sorta have found a solution although its quite annoying. When launching the game with the first screen that shows up, i chose to launch it in windowed mode instead of full screen. It actually allowed me to get into the game but in a really small window. I can change the resolution to what ever i want so its not too big of a problem. im not sure how that works but it allows me to play the game now.

There's a fake fullscreen mode program to be downloaded somewhere for Oblivion, you should give that a go.

Yeah, I have no idea how to fix this issue. Usually it would be the crash-on-main-menu for me but now it's just straight crash on start-up. The joys of gaming.
