I would recommend a mod like Glenvar Castle if you want an excellent set of storage containers.
That particular chest is special: you put a single ingredient in, next day it's duplicated. Collect within an in-game week or the chest will eat all of its contents.
Put multiple types of ingredients in at once, or any other items... and it'll eat everything within a day.
Reload a previous save, or go ham with the "additem" command.

There's a mod called Is It Safe which gives you a spell you can cast on containers to confirm if they are safe for storage.
