Just bought a house in Anvil
It cost me 5000 money. Was it worth it? I am at level 11.

Houses are never worth it, they're just a good way of showing you have money to spend. Then again, you always want a place to store excess goods and having houses all over the place means you never have to waste a lot of hours fast-travelling there.

Look up the mod Better Benirus Mannor by Khettienna. This mod really makes the house worth it.

Houses are never necessary. You can store all your stuff in the Imperial City Market District for free.

There are 6 open-topped Grain Sacks, 3 on each side in between the shops. They are the most convenient place to store items since they are free to use and in a central location on the map. They are non respawning so are safe for storage.

These grain sacks are located everywhere in the game. You can find them in most of the guilds too so you don't even need to buy a house in each town.

Just make sure that you are using the right grain sacks. They are the ones with the open tops where you can see the corn or grains from the top of the sack.

The main house I buy asap is the cheap one in the Waterfront District, because it is also a central location.

The house in Bravil is another good choice for a house because it is near the Shivering Isles and is located near the second best non dlc merchant.

The houses in Leyawiin and Anvil are too out of the way for me so I never use them. I only buy them when I'm rich just to complete the quests.

I am a house mod junkie. I have to have them all, plus a few mod-created houses lol. I also run Blackie's CM Partners mod just so I can have NPCs to guard it all. Somehow it would break role-playing for me to just have my stuff out there in the open.

Plus, I am pretty sure that if you leave any food out the beggars will come and eat it. So, if you want to be serious about practicing alchemy you had best get a house.

You can buy the houses in the cities for free technically , when you start the dialogue to buy the house you purchase it exit the dialogue , hit your inventory key IMMEDIATELY , place all your gold in the nearest drawrs , box , or w/e it will fit in , wait till it says it removed X gold from you , then collect your gold from said box and you get the house for free.

Benirus Manor is a mini quest that ties in nicely to the Mages Guild Quest-line. But as a PC house, it sucks. None of the containers are exempt from re-spawning, so you end up loosing anything you stored in them for more than two weeks game time.
NexusMods has a mod called A Better Benirus Manor that fixes the container storage problem and improves the looks of the whole property after the quest is completed.
