The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

How do I enjoy this game?
I played Skyrim for a large portion of my childhood, and picked this game up some time ago, but I just couldn't get a hold on the weird style and jank. How do I look past this without having grown up with it?

Maybe make a caster or archer, if want invincible god, then archer. Ignore the main quest and do sidequests. Oblivion have the best quests of about any game, making the world very lively and immersive.

Edit: Well, GTA 4, have maybe the best quests (missions).

I too played Oblivion after Skyrim. Fortunately I was already an adult when I played Skyrim so there is no nostalgia involved for me. I just enjoy the game.

I'm the same way about Morrowind. I never played it, so I'm hesitant to play because it looks so antiquated. Plus I thought the Morrowind expansion of Elder Scrolls Online to be a bit dull for me.

Oblivion was my first taste of the Elder Scrolls series on an Xbox 360. I remember liking the overall story and atmosphere a little more than Skyrim to be honest, but that's a personal taste.

I get it though. I'm always a forward looking gamer and whenever I have nostalgia for an older game I finished and romanticize about it -- when I check it out again about an hour in that nostalgia wears off and I get bored quickly and annoyed with "the jank" because we're just too spoiled by the latest advances and innovations in gaming.

The Elder Scrolls series has a great modding community and I'm pretty sure you can mod Oblivion up to be more modern[gamerant.com] in the same way Skyrim has been improved.

Bethesda games never click with me the first time. It usually takes me three playthroughs to get lngrosed in the world. Also try some mods to get rid of some jank. Jesus loves you

As someone who started with Skyrim and then worked his way back throught the series, just forgetting expectations and keeping playing did it for me. And from Skyrim to Oblivion it didnt even take that long.
Yes in some ways you lose technicalities the newer game has in it;s favor, but if you look beyond that you'll also see that Skyrim lost some stuff that made Oblivion amazing.
I even prefer Oblivion to it since, but must add that is simply because I regard the things Oblivion has over Skyrim more important than the other way around

Same way you look past Skyrim's weird style and jank

I started with Daggerfall. I mainly played it because it pixel nudity. But it's a fun as a casual sandbox. Theres not much content in terms of quests and the dungeons are a nightmare.

I like Morrowind the best because it has a fantasy feel as in you can break physics with all the spell shenanigans.

Skyrim is less that. Skyrim has more realism but you don't get to jump across the land or float around or run at 100000 mph like you can in Morrowind.

And this. I'm going to buy this since it's on sale and finally just give it a whirl.

I don't know how Oblivion will feel but Skyrim, you can feel your foot steps and your weight. Morrowind kind of feels like you are a rigid stick that can eventually be super mario. Daggerfall is really just running forward and backward all day.

From time to time, I've looked at images of this game and it just reminds me of Fallout 3. I can't even remember how Fallout 3 felt compared to Fallout 4 but I guess I just am not a fan of the fallout series despite completing the heck out of both games.

I would say Oblivion is def not like Fallout 3. One of the stronger points of Oblivion is it's quests and Fallout 3 was completely lacklustre in that regard imo. Imo Fallout 3 en 4 are also just bad in that regard, if you want to play an interesting one that really draws you in it's lore characters and quests I would really advise trying out New vegas. It's amazing imo,

You are wrong, Fallout 3 is a very good game, with good quests, just need to be fleshed out with mods.

Agreed that fallout 3 and 4 are bad games to measure the quality of the fallout franchise. 3 and 4 might as well be in alternative universes and sequels to oblivion rather than sequels to fallout 1 or 2. New Vegas is the direct sequel to 2, while 3 is basically a reboot made by someone who skimmed the wiki about fallout 1 and 2 before making it.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 were and are buggy messes that you HAVE to mod to get to work properly. Any game released today in the state those two were would have massive player refunds. I love both of them.

x2 thread of salty, picky nerds calling something they dislike bad because they dislike it.

If you think any bethesda game is bad, you need to have your head checked.

I guess I should have specified that the graphic style reminds me of fallout 3. Just a zoom in with face to face view. It's really the most disturbing dialogue style in all the Elder scroll games because it just forces you to look at their face while they are forced to look straight in yours.

But having just started Oblivion, I can already feel that the land just feels smaller when compared to Morrowind and Skyrim.

Fallout 3 also felt alot more smaller than fallout 4.

I'm already seeing annoying things like not deleting your spellbook and being forced to use a certain control scheme for some actions. This game definitely has a Apple product feel to it versus an Android/PC feel.

Yeah the land while being 1.6x the size of morrowind feels much smaller because it was procedurally generated from algorithms (as the only game Bethesda has done this with since daggerfall) and resulted in a boring flat piece of land where you can walk in a straight line from any place to any destination without anything impeding your way (barring the invisible wall cyrodil border in specific places).

And the apple thing is on point, as Todd Howard loves Apple products and even modelled skyrims UI off of the iPhone because he loved it so much, and of course nothing screams iPhone UI like medieval technology fantasy game, right?
