role-play reasonng for starting in jail
Of course the mystery and open-endedness of the TES games beginning this way is not to be violated with pre-imposed stories.
That being said, what are some stories you have thought of?
I'll share a bunch that I have:
Bard- Unaware of his percieved pomposity and befriending the Countess a little too closely, he was slapped behind bars at the Count's orders.

Witch Hunter- arrested for Witchcraft after an accusation became a double-edged trial which they happened to be on the wrong edge of...a former accomplice of Bradon Lirrian, after escaping, they might take the chance to begin their witchery and two-faced persecution in new towns.

Rogue- though evidence enough was about of their multiple illicit activities, their real troubles only began when they insulted an authority figure with a sharp tongue, provoked by their natural enmity.

Nightblade- loyalties shifted and protections vanished, and suddenly ambushed and captured while performing a routine mission the guards must have known about beforehand.

Monk: Arrested after refusing on grounds of vows and moral principle to comply with the town watch's orders.

Mage- Formerly a dutiful court wizard of a friendly noble, things went awry when the benevolent lord perished and his immature son took the title. Paranoid of the mage's supernatural abilities, and threatened by their intellect and knowledge of the program's under his father's reign, the young noble found a way to accuse the mage of treason.

Knight- do you trust his face? Accused of crimes or disloyalties unknown, after escaping prison he serves a new young master. Those close to his master urge that he is not to be trusted, but the master wants to believe. Will the knight prove loyal and redeem his reputation?

Healer- At face value a skilled and dutiful healer, they keep their criminal history a close secret. Drawn to soothing pained souls, including their own, and looking for a way to push their mental and magickal performance, they began dealing in the world of certain substances...it wasn't long before a weak-willed former ally was induced to tell, and they found themself unexpectedly in irons.

A political refuge from a battle between mutually accused "heresies," they were, after the conflict, captured and awaiting a long-sentenced execution, when the Crusader finds a new cause...

Acrobat- arrested for infiltrating a wealthy international merchant's harem.

All very interesting ideas and I like the Monk one. I would go for that because the bonuses for choosing that must include immunity for petty crime with the city guard. The guards don't want bad karma by manhandling a man of the cloth without good reason.

And a discount on ale at certain inns of ill repute.

I guess that minor immunity would be balanced out by having to actually follow thier vows. Thing is, it depends on what kind of monk they are. If it's not of the imperial cult (or the tribunal temple in morrowind) the guards will probably have few qualms.

my characters are always in jail for public indecency, making bone piles were they shouldn't and after social changes to the Empire, it's now an offense to make jokes about Kajit's butts

My first character (female Kajiit Acrobat) went out drinking in the Imperial City, got grabby with some girl's boyfriend and ended up in... well, a catfight.

Come to think of it, I usually imagine my origin involves some kind of drunken "what did I do last night" situation. Probably dancing topless on the tables or something similarly ridiculous. You know how adventurers are.

My first character was a Redguard Battlemage who was orphaned at a young age who had to steal and journey to survive. He was arrested for stealing food and money at the marketplace.
