Any other ideas as to how to resolve this issue?
Update: Oblivion runs fine on my laptop running the same operating system. I've just bought a new PC and this is the first time I've run Oblivion on it.
there are some registry changes that have been reported to solve the issue, but i cannot comment on that as i've never had to use that.
i am using proton 5.13-1 on centos8 stream
Maybe it's a hardware issue? For what it's worth, my laptop has a Ryzen 7 3700U with Vega graphics, while my PC is a Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card.
First Gog: (Off Internet)
"Oblivion - Greyed out options or missing Play button in the launcher. This issue is caused by a missing registry key. Opening the GOG GALAXY application and using the Verify / Repair function from the Customize button (on the right of the play button) > Manage installation > Repair should fix it."
Steam: (from Reddit)

Another registry fix.
However...
The ProtonDB page for Oblivion https://www.protondb.com/app/22330 has a number of other suggestions that I experimented with and found the following solution:
Use the launch option: PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
AND
one or both of the following: PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1
AND
Use Proton version earlier than than 7.0-1
I don't understand what those launch flags all do, but Oblivion now works.
EDIT: OK, so Oblivion runs but now it keeps randomly freezing and shutting down.
I tried maybe five or six times and the longest the game ran before freezing was about five minutes.
Not sure as I have not used Linux for years.
But Oblivion itself does have some sound issues which can degrade, lag the game, cause large stutters or crashes, especially when music or sounds change.

Update: disabling audio does not fix game freezing. Oh well, it was worth a try.
Update#2: I remember reading somewhere that the launch option DRI_PRIME=1 should be used when using an ATI/AMD video card. I've tried it and haven't had any crashes/freezes so far...
