Oblivion Menu items grayed out
Installed Oblivion on Ubuntu with KDE. It loads fine but only the Elderscroll.com and Exit options are accessible on the menu. The rest are grayed out. Anyone know why or what I need to do to correct? Thanks.

known issue; make sure you have no startup/launch options for the game executable.
meaning leaving it empty or having nothing after %command%

I'm having the same issue on Ubuntu Mate. I don't have any startup launch options set.
Any other ideas as to how to resolve this issue?

Update: Oblivion runs fine on my laptop running the same operating system. I've just bought a new PC and this is the first time I've run Oblivion on it.

^it might be related to the proton version used.
there are some registry changes that have been reported to solve the issue, but i cannot comment on that as i've never had to use that.
i am using proton 5.13-1 on centos8 stream

I've tried using Proton Experimental, 7.0, 6.3 and 5.13. All these versions of Proton have the same issue of greyed out menu items, but only on my PC: Oblivion runs fine on my laptop using all four of those Proton versions. Both of my computers are running Ubuntu Mate 21.10.

Maybe it's a hardware issue? For what it's worth, my laptop has a Ryzen 7 3700U with Vega graphics, while my PC is a Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics card.

GOG or Steam installation? Maybe the info below may help.
First Gog: (Off Internet)
"Oblivion - Greyed out options or missing Play button in the launcher. This issue is caused by a missing registry key. Opening the GOG GALAXY application and using the Verify / Repair function from the Customize button (on the right of the play button) > Manage installation > Repair should fix it."

Steam: (from Reddit)

Another registry fix.

Thanks for the link slayor3000. The registry edit didn't work for me though, unfortunately. Wine just threw a bunch of errors that I don't know enough about to understand.

However...

The ProtonDB page for Oblivion https://www.protondb.com/app/22330 has a number of other suggestions that I experimented with and found the following solution:

Use the launch option: PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
AND
one or both of the following: PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1
AND
Use Proton version earlier than than 7.0-1

I don't understand what those launch flags all do, but Oblivion now works.

EDIT: OK, so Oblivion runs but now it keeps randomly freezing and shutting down.

Does it freeze when loading new areas? Or randomly when playing?
FoundryDancer Mar 28, 2022 @ 4:41pm
It freezes randomly when playing. The first few times it froze within less than a minute of game time, my character was in the waterfront area and was just walking around the shacks. I dropped all the graphics settings down to minimum, thinking it might have something to do with that but it still froze.

I tried maybe five or six times and the longest the game ran before freezing was about five minutes.

Freeze or crash? or both?
Not sure as I have not used Linux for years.
But Oblivion itself does have some sound issues which can degrade, lag the game, cause large stutters or crashes, especially when music or sounds change.

The screen freezes up and then several seconds later Oblivion crashes completely and drops back to the desktop. Thanks for the link, I'll try disabling sound and see if that has an effect.

Update: disabling audio does not fix game freezing. Oh well, it was worth a try.

Update#2: I remember reading somewhere that the launch option DRI_PRIME=1 should be used when using an ATI/AMD video card. I've tried it and haven't had any crashes/freezes so far...
