Problem on Vahtacen's Secret Quest

So the problem seems to be that no matter where I aim the spells the sever magika scroll does not lower the column so when i throw the elevate magika spell i get shocked. Please can someone help me resolve how to finish this quest and open the column to continue the mages guild questline. Thanks

isnt it the fortify magicka scroll that's required after the first two spells?

If I do the elevate magika before the sever magika the column goes up and shocks me

Yes, although I haven't tried using damage magika arrows. I'll have a look to see if I have any

I'm pretty sure its fire or ice spell, then fortify and damage magicka spells...I forgot the order sorry, check the wiki.

No its definitely damage magika before fortify. Anyway I couldnt find any arrows but I did find a damage magika staff. Not sure why the scroll didnt work but the staff did, so finally I have opened the pillar. Thanks.
