The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Need help rebinding my controller
I am having a hard time with setting up Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – first, the game is unresponsive to my PC controller. I was trying to rebind the keyboard buttons to that controller, but nothing would change. I can use the controller joystick to move the cursor around the options menu, but I can’t change anything.

I was getting nowhere fast, I had to use my mouse to properly close the game outright - I couldn't get out using my controller. After I logged out of the game, the Oblivion icon was still present on the Windows taskbar, but clicking on that would just bring me back to the desktop.

I tried to remap again, but even with that, when I remap to a button on my controller, some random key bind appears instead of the controller button. That, and also I can't scroll down on the key mapping screen to change the buttons for the other game actions.
I am very excited to play Oblivion - can someone please help me?

Why not use NorthernUI plugin instead of Steam built-in mouse/keyboard emulation?

Emulation will never be the same as native Xbox controller support

I second using the mod, but if you do not want to do that I believe you have to go into the .ini and find this line bUse Joystick=1 and change the 1 to 0 or the limited joystick settings will interfere with your mapping. The file is under Documents/My Games/Oblivion and not in the game main file sometimes referred to as the directory.

Dude this actually worked and got my Xbox One controller working perfectly for Oblivion. I feel hundreds of hours of my life are now forfeit.
