Yup, if they had kept the structure from Morrowind where the guilds were mutually exclusive the game would have been close to perfect. I largely ignore leveling in Oblivion and play on normal. It seems a reasonable balance compared to trying to min/max and play on very hard.
Not to mention, you know, Dovahkiin could literally rekindle the line of Dragonborn emperors. Yeah Dovahkiin isn't of the Septim bloodline but like the Potema resurrection sidequest hints at, you have a legit claim to the Imperial throne.
And of course, can only adopt kids, because the idea of actually producing your own children is uh, not an option, dovahkiin has dragon blood and no gametes.
Being the founder of a new empire and leading a revanchist conquest against the Thalmor would be cool but nah, Dovahkiin can adopt some homeless kid and literally never see them again while they go out and devour dragon souls.
But putting giant missed opportunities aside, Oblivion is better on plot and guild plots. Thieves Guild is actually better in Skyrim, imo, but everything else is ehhhhh
Sure, you do get solicited for it a bit too straightforward. But beyond that, it is more substantial in content and complexity than any other guild / Companions in Skyrim.
College of Winterhold, Companions, and Civil War are just... bad, while TG is somewhat good.
For example reading the journals, they are written from the perspective of the games mechanic, like "I broke 15 lockpicks trying to pick the lock" like why is the lockpick breaking mechanic included in a journal? The only reason they break in game is for balancing, not realism or immersion. Makes no sens, like almost all the damn writing.
