Even mages guild is better. In Skyrim I can't even call them "a guild", really. It's a joke. Just a bunch of mages who welcomed any random warrior as their leader. Are they really mages?
Skyrim has a good main questline, some random quests and vampires "guild". That's it. All other guilds are a joke
Thanks for the tips, but those don't seem like quality of life at all. I'm fine with copy pasting mods files (after I've reviewed them) but I don't want to have to use mod managers and other apps to install mods. I don't use managers/testers and never will.
If there's a direct way of applying those mods, I'm all for it, but I'm not downloading multiple managers/testers just to mod the game. I'm also not navigating a non secure site for a dependency download that will likely hijack something.
While you might not think of it as such, Steam Workshop is a mod manager that has been built into Steam. And the official download sites for the major Oblivion mod managers are just as safe as Steam.
Skyrim is a great game but as someone who has played almost every Elder Scrolls game (besides arena) starting with Morrowind, I always felt like Morrowind and Oblivion had so many more mechanics that just make them so special to me, if Skyrim had some of the content that was in Oblivion it would be the best but as it stands, Oblivion is the best Elder Scrolls game for new players or long time fans of the series.
I've never used Steam Workshop.
That said Oblivion had the best theme and story for what I like in games like this and Morrowind was the best for Magic and equipment. My biggest three disappointments with Skyrim.
1. The magic system. I loved the freedom in Morrowind with magic and enchants. It was made worse in Oblivion but in Skyrim they just gutted it. The magic looks cooler in Skyrim yeah, but the system is horrible. I miss
2. Equipment. Same as the magic system, Morrowind was the best with more weapon types, armor types and slots and you could even wear clothing and robes with your armor. Things got worse in Oblivion and even more so in Skyrim. There are also a lack of unique items in my opinion. Smithing is just so good that the unique items you do find are just meh compared to what you craft yourself. I'm a little mixed on this as smithing your own stuff is cool but it makes new equipment kinda boring.
3. Guilds. Skyrim guilds are just not as good as in Oblivion. I thought the thieves guild was ok, could be better. The companions was bad, felt super rushed. I did not like the DBH and even the mage stuff was a disappointment. It's kinda sad you can become the arch mage without even using magic.
I felt like Skyrims guild system had a ton of potential that was wasted.
Oblivion is far, far superior for literally anything that uses magic. Guilds are much better. The Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion is particularly famous. Alteration is actually usable. Conjuration has options beyond Atronachs + Dremora for Daedra and you can actually summon undead; Skyrim actually has reanimation without mods though.
Skyrim has Smithing, which is incredibly useful. Oblivion, good luck finding a helmet. Skyrim has a basically perfect levelling system... for an action game. Oblivion has attributes in addition to skills, while races and genders have actual differences (most are minor, some are Bretons being OP as hell) as a much more robust RPG. Oblivion is rigorous in its levelling, and requires mods to level up without spreadsheets and autism. I spent 1000+ hours on PS3 Oblivion (thus, no mods and half the DLC), I can juggle spreadsheet leveling four chars at once, but I very much enjoy Easy Leveling.
Skyrim has native controller support; Oblivion requires modding. Skyrim is playable vanilla, Oblivion is a punishment without mods.
imo, Oblivion with a small amount of modding is absolutely incredible. Skyrim I'll play but Oblivion is just immaculate.
After 20 or so vanilla playthroughs and 50-60 or so modded playthroughs on Skyrim, I cant even stand to play the game anymore. But I still come back to Oblivion at least once a month and find a new way to enjoy it.
SPEARS, the combat is always better because they have SPEARS.
Spell fails are fun though, it saves your butt when you force enemies into dice rolls. Morrowind having the option to have variable magnitude spells is also really neat imo, and adding some variable magnitude reduces spell cost and increases success rates with often little loss. I really liked that mechanic.
Morrowind also has the most spiteful locals that constantly refer to me with slurs, which makes me feel more like a tourist in Poland, which is how I expect to be treated. Skyrim you hardly get the occasional insult, and most of these are put in the mouths of outlaws or drunks. Too polite.
