Lockpicking
Omg Lockpicking in Oblivion is so damn hard, had 40 Lockpicks and they are all gone so fast, any way to go around opening chests, or are they even worth to be picked open?

buy a bunch of lockpicks from the shady guy near the Imperial City stables, do the Nocturnal daedric quest, or train your alteration and get some unlock spells. Another thing, there's a pattern to the tumbler fall - it might go something like fast-fast-fast-slow, so you want to wait for the slow fall to click. You could also get a fortify lockpicking spell (I think they exist) because your lockpicking skill determines how fast the tumblers fall just in general.

To be honest I agree, I think it was designed with console more in mind, cause I didn't have this much annoyance with it before on ps3 :andy:
all you do is press up and press enter? not that hard

And it's all used by mouse, which was off putting at first for me.
I never even bothered learning how to lockpick tbh. I mean I can open easy lock no problem but I don't have the patience to open harder ones. I liked skyrim's lockpicking mechanic/system. This one is basically just based on RNG even if your security skill is high. I just use console to open chests and doors (though with my most recent character I try not to break into places as it's not part of their personality to do that).

The thing in Oblivion is that i havent found a single chest that i could say "yep it was worth it". Always filled with a couple of potions or under 20 gold coins. Only have 40 plus hours of gameplay dunno if it gets better but from what i could understand the best gear/weapons are obtained from quests and not from chests. :steamfacepalm:

type in
player.additem
space
A
space
100
and that should give you a 100 lockpicks
fixxed it again

It keeps messing up the item codes and won't let it show up but here's a link to what I was talking about https://www.lifewire.com/lockpick-oblivion-item-code-3398279 hope it helps also for mission item use PlaceAtMe id, number,X,Y- Spawns a creature, npc or item only use this if you are having a hard time finding something or just to goof around in game

There's a simple way to master lockpicking. The lock will stick if you click when the tumbler (yellow pieces) are at the very top. If you click any time else, your lockpick will break and a certain number of tumblers you set will reset based off of the difficulty of the lock:

VERY EASY - 1
EASY - 2?
AVERAGE + - 3

The tumbler falls at three speeds: fast, when it drops near instantly; medium, when it stays up longer; and slow, when there is a noticeable period of time it will stay at the top of the lock. Your goal is to hit the tumbler up so it reaches the fast speed. Once you get it up to the fast position, hit it again and click once it sticks at the top to lock it in place. Repeat for the rest.
I played this for YEARS!! The lock-picking was NEVER this stupidly hard. I know I'm out of practice, but that doesn't account for this level of atrocity in my lock-picking skill. :-(
I just can't do it so I feel for you. I've seen playthroughs where people can, so I know it's not impossible. Maybe it's my headphones but I can never hear the telltale noise that's supposed to help you. I didn't know it existed until someone mentioned it on a previous thread :D

So I cheese it.

I decide what is a "fair" amount of lockpicks, depending on my skill, and use the auto pick. Save before you do and if you're going way beyond what is reasonable, reload the save.

I know, I'm a terrible person, but when I've maxed everything and I still can't open anything above easy, I take steps. :D

Edit: Just realised this is a 4 year old necro. Sorry everyone.

Necros are technically allowed so long as the addition is constructive.
Either way, follow my advice from 2017. There's no audio cue. It's all visual.
Headphones are very useful when lockpicking because the audio cues are much clearer but it's easier to just carry a few hundred lockpicks and auto pick which increases the security skill. The Skeleton Key weights 5 so I prefer to just carry hundreds of weightless lockpicks.

I've never noticed any audio ques. You're right about the Skeleton key, though. Alternatively, there's also the Tower Doomstone for any non-Master locks.
Alteration exists, which makes Security useless except to increase Agility. Even then you want to deliberately break picks to level up.
Kind of like how Speechcraft exists but is useless because Charm exists.

At least Security has a use in the early game when you don't have access to strong Unlock spells outside of the once-per-day Warden's Key which can only unlock up to Hard locks. The Speechcraft wheel is ridiculously easy to abuse, and even when you do fail to persuade someone after maxing the wheel, you can just use the Beguile you get for free from the Bravil Recommendation quest to guarantee you hit the upper limit.
Nobody mentioned fortify luck in all this time? Torch to slow the tumblers, fortify luck to increase your effective skill level without an experience penalty. I had to resort to this because I had security as a minor skill and I needed to un-equip the skeleton key to raise security above 60.
