Oblivion running poorly on high end PC
I've seen a lot of people complaining about Oblivion running poorly on their machine but they usually have mods installed and its mostly caused by Oblivions not so great engine but I dont have any mods installed at the moment and it runs awful. It stutters, and there are just huge fps problems to the point where I can't make it past the prison cell at the start without it hurting my heart. On top of all this the audio doesn't work at all past the intro theme on the main menu.

Is there something I can do that I haven't already done to make it run with some decent frames and proper audio?

I've set the affinity of the game to just two cores already and it hasn't helped, I've looked into .ini edits but half of the values they say to change don't exist for some reason in my .ini file, for instance shadow mapping resolution. Also running this game in any kind of compatibility mode crashes it immediatley. I'm running the game on the default quality setting (medium) changing thsi doesn't seem to do anything for performance.

All my drivers are up to date as of today.

These are my specs

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (build 10586), 64-bit

Sound Device: Razer Kraken 7.1

Realtek High Definition Audio

Video Card: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 3GB
(not sure what specific card, looked into the bios and signatures and it might be a 7950)

Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor 3.5 GHz

RAM: 8.0 GB

Any advice is appreciated, I just want to be able to enjoy my favorite Elder Scrolls again.

If there's nothing able to be done then I guess I just have to wait for Skyblivion

Not sure if this would help, but try running Oblivion in compatibillity mode for an earlier OS and with admiinstrator credentials. I had to do this in order to even get it to install (non-Steam version).

The game immediately crashes whenever I try to run it in any kind of compatibility mode.

Did you install game in any of your program folders? If you move game out of C:/program(x86) into another hard disk/SSD or at least in separate folder like C:/ (default root directory), then Windows will not block or interfere with UAC (User Account Control). You should not need administration rights when you have moved game folder after this.

For the framerate/stutter problem, install the mod "Oblivion Stutter Remover", it helps greatly.

I am not so sure but there are some sound card that causes trouble around TES4 to play.
This is one of the sample for these issue.

Try using these mods. You will also need OBSE for OSR.

Oblivion Stutter Remover: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/23208/?

Quiet Feet MAX: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/12331/?

Read the description for quiet feet max to see why you probably need it. I use the whispered feet version.

Sounds like your GPU is an R9 280. Hate to be that guy but I'm thinking your CPU could be an issue. The game is going to like stronger single cores and the FX chips are notorious for their weak single core performance.

I've got an FX6300/270x in my backup rig. I'll give the game a quick install and see how it runs.

***Ok. I installed it on my backup rig using an FX6300/270x/16gb. I left all settings at default but moved it to 1080p. The game seems to have no troubles holding 60 fps outside and it's running very smooth.

***Tested it max with full AA/Bloom and it ran at 60 fps smoothly without issue.

Ok lets get it right!

You have at least three audio devices from your own post: Realtek HDA from your onboard audio codec (mainboard), Razers Kraken (headset) with its own USB connected sound card and the one you don't seem to mention, but everybody have to either tick off during each update/install is HDMI sound from your GPU. In short if you have problem with stuttering all three way of delivering sound to speaker, then it is very likely not a sound problem as each of these have their own way to handle sound to speaker.

As an example your headset will use PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation=raw digital format) from your USB port to soundcard on your cord which then create positional cues for 7.1. to each speaker.
PCM is what your mainboard internally create for all sound so it is the raw material for onboard Realtek. The only exeption would be sound sent from GPU through HDMI where your GPU will take place and replace how sound will be sent through your HDMI connection.

In short: Kraken headset sould not have any impact on your stuttering, if was a problem connected with sound and stuttering.

From other threads (which poster above have linked you to), there might be a conflict for 3D EAX and all iteration of this to create in game special effects sound with positional cues. If you happens to use 3D soundback for Realtek, turn that off as it isn't supported (from Realtek) and on newer Realtek codecs there is better option like Dolby Digital Live or Digital Therather Sound (DTS) Connect etc. to at least get a surround sound for 5.1 speaker or more.

Press/click Windows Start and type "Sound" (Windows will search yor system). There you can disable and enable what device sould be active. Setting device to default device wil mean that audio stream will be directed that path.

As an example I do need to change between my USB headsets own sound card and Realtek (speaker: PCM, Realtek Digital Output: Optical) each time I want to use my surround system or headset. To do that I need to open Sound and pick what device to be default.

I disable (turns an red arrow white) these devices I don't need like HDMI from my Nvidia (my display use HDMI and have small speaker I never use). Each time I need to make default speaker for Turtle Beach Z60 (symbol turns green) for output and one for microphone (called: communication device) and change back to speaker Realtek HDA.

This game is built on a 32 bit exectable and have been develped while 2 core still where on its way to become mainstream, so it will have some limitations for how to handle things which might have an impact on what you describe as "stuttering".

in most cases stuttering is releated to how far you can see in game and how many items that will loaded with each cell while you move. In Oblivion Reloaded there are recommened settings and with those I still see some pop ups (item just pop up instead of gradually showing up) and there is still some "stutter" when I move while beiung in third person, but that is to be expected as there is more to see while in that mode. In the original game you had to live with a very narrow view in first person, if you where on an Athlon 4200+ and ATI X1950XT card. OR move camera view a bit out of these standard settings both for first person and third person mode.

I would suggest you take a look at Oblivion Reloaded as it will support SM 3.0 on newer GPU/video cards and even HDR+AA. You don't need ENB to get this working. It is a very big project that have made my game look better and also seem to improve some things in the background.

It have also a purger so it can empty memory (RAM) when it will be needed. Press "O" and you will see settings that you can change or go to ini for this mod. You need to install a DLL (a dynamic link libraray) for it to work (you find all files you need in zip file with instructions both on site and in folder Doc). Read instruction veru careful and do preperation as recommened. Read also first on what and how to install Qarl's Texture Pack III Redimized - QTP3 R. Those pickture on IC door are actually the way they look in game for me, so you can imagine what kind of improvement to the original doors you see in game. Faces look natural (at least enough for my needs) and you can control how much grass (density), hight of grass and width of each grass node in OR by adjusting x,y and z in menu (press "O") on screen.

My own system show that we are right now on Windows 10 v.1607 build 14393.xxx and your's are only build 10586. There have been discussions about problems with the earlier build of WIndows in Windows Insider that some Realtek driver could in some cases cause problems because the way Windows handled some internal things. Might be good to check Windows Update that you actually are on the latest Windows version/build for your system.

Make sure that you at least install Unoffical Oblivion Patches as recommended. Thoe patches fixes a lot of problems, some might even have to do with sound (as items are connected to sound in game, like when you move and your feet create sound).

Hope that this was helpful and Good luck!

The easiest way to figure out if it's a sound problem is to go to the Oblivion.ini file and disable sound in it. If the game works fine afterwards, then you've probably figured out the cause.
