Why do you care about what other people may think? IMO If using that mod makes you enjoy the game better, I'd say it's more than OK!
I always played with Duke's mods myself to do the same thing you're trying to do... and my rule of thumb is: do they are still able to kill me if I screw up? If the response is yes, then everything is fine :D
And believe me... I die in two/three hits if I get caught with my guard down... or even 1 hit if one of the archers get a headshot on me :P
So, IMHO yes... it's totally OK!
But TBF, I don't think I can qualify as purist myself... I always played this game modded since ~2008 or so.
They aren't hosted on Nexus, the last versions are held there in TES Alliance.
Not sure if the changes those mods make would be up to your taste, so make sure to read the extensive ReadMe about how they are different and what they change... Oblivion combat is a new experience with those mods installed.
First thing, Combat Geometry is REALLY important... you can't turn your back to enemies and where hits land makes all the difference. You can feint and enemies can too. You can use your momentum to boost your damage. Big/Bulky enemies are slower but hit REALLY hard... giant type enemies can put you in ragdoll mode (free fall) if they hit you due to their strength.
Hits while you're on the floor are normally fatal no matter the armor you're wearing... depending on luck (IIRC.)
Raising your shield consumes stamina but maintaining it doesn't, but enemies won't attack while you're behind your shield (mostly)
You can time blocks and that will make the enemy lose coordination for a bit and you can use that to do damage.
Consuming potions causes an animation so you can't spam them in combat and have to retreat to safety first, else you're an easy target.
Fighting against multiple enemies is almost impossible unless you use the environment to your advantage (at earlier levels at least!)
Keep in mind that leveling will be kind of brutal, so you might have to run to the guards for help often :P
For Archery, there's locational damage and headshots... for you and enemies. Lower tier Arrows are slower and can be side stepped once you get the hand of it and enemies can miss (unlike in vanilla Oblivion).
Drawing the bow consumes stamina and holding it consumes even more, but you have to hold it for a bit (catch your breath) before letting it go to have the maximum accuracy... and firing arrows while moving is not possible.
All in all they change too much and take a bit to learn the ropes again, but IMHO they are worth the learning curve.
Also, they have extensive configuration and tweaks, so you can probably customize them to suit your needs... For example, I use another mod for more general stamina management, so I reduce the stamina consumption for Duke Comba mod a bit, because if I don't there's a kind of double dip of punishment while the other mod is running.
Good luck!
Hope you enjoy the game with those mods, but if not be sure to ask for more options, as there plenty more to try!
Another popular option is Vanilla Combat Enhanced... another possibility is one of the Deadly Reflex, or one of the Unnecessary Violence... they're more anime-ish in spirit, but they're fun too.
Also, Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul can optionally boost the damage of everything (enemies and you) by a configurable amount too and has lots of other extra enhancements that can make the game more interesting too.
:)
get enchanted weapon with elemental damage or use poisons. Clannfear have resistance to normal weapon damage (by stats it reflects 20% of damage back to you) so you can't kill it with plain weapon without killing yourself too. you need magic to do so. Clannfear has 20% weakness to shock. if you think Oblivion is hard go play Morrowind :) know your enemies, learn their weaknesses and resistances, don't go blindly hacking everything with your rusty dagger :)
if you're focusing on heavy armor but neglect athletics you'll find yourself in a position of turtle. athletics allows to run faster, to be less fatigued.
And i've played through morrowind at least 6 times
Edit: By slow, i mean the combat is slow
I doubt you can go far with plane weapon in Oblivion without magic (enchantments or spells or with poisons at least). Each level enemies gains health so your plain weapon even with 100 blade skill would be weak in most cases.
if you don't want to deal with soulgems and soultraps you can install mod - Arcane Bank of Ciirodil - it will give you regenerated charges with time which you can then use to fill your weapon.
there was also that aspect of heavier weapons typically being more durable than lighter ones, which was pretty apparent when you pumped your strength up so high that weaker weapons would deteriorate so fast
first I hit it with weakness to magic 100% for 10 seconds, then claymore with enchantment:
shock/fire/frost 10pts, drain health 48pt for 1s, soultrap for 2 seconds.
after weakness it dealt double damage and killed poor critter.
so, you can easily kill it with custom enchanted weapon. even if you're bad with destruction you'll need 4 hacks instead of 2 but it is still better than 20 I guess
(I play on 61% difficulty so at lvl 50 it will be 100% so it's still a bit harder than normal now)
