Magetallow Candles Box
I have the Frostcrag Spire Add-On and while shopping for upgrades, I noticed two Magetallow Candle Boxes in the inventory of the women who sells those upgrades. I know they're used for the Spellmaking and Enchanting Altars, but I don't know in what way. Are both needed to activate both altars? Is one consumed every time you use an altar?
My character is still at a low level, so money is tight and I'd rather know this kind of stuff before making a 3000+ purchase.

You need one to activate an altar, and so two are required to activate both. Once an altar is active you can use it as many times as you please, without the need for further candles.

They are a one time use item, once you use them to "activate" an altar they remain active for the rest of the game. You would require both to use both altars but you can simply gain access to the arcane university if money is tight.

I always thought the prices for "keeping this stuff for me" were way overblown. Yes, you get a free house, but you pay for 3 more just paying the storage fees. Meanwhile, nothing else in the game costs that much unless it's Enchanted and/or Daedric.

Thanks for the info.
I do agree that the prices seem a bit much, at least for the regular upgrades. The magetallow boxes are a bit more reasonable, if only because spellmaking and enchanting are both really powerful resources to have at one's disposal.

Being powerful is all the more reason they should cost less. These features balance the game and make it far more enjoyable. There's one player facing multiple foes at once more often than not; these bonuses offset that imbalance.

That's just your point of view. I increased my house prices by 3 times. I also reduced how much gold I get from enemies and selling.
