The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Help, Oblivion crashes to desktop every time I try to load my game
This all started Friday night. I can get to the main menu just fine. However whenever I try to load any save, the game completes the loading screen, goes black and then crashes to desktop.

I've tried updating my graphics drivers, validating the integrity of the game files and have tried running it in windowed mode at 1920x1080, but nothing has changed.

I was playing Wednesday night and Oblivion was working just fine. I only have two mods installed, OBSE and NorthernUI Vanilla.

Is this a character you have been playing for a long time? Did you have any mods installed before when playing this character?

Always make q copy of your ini file before modding it may be your save game if it's the only one you've been playing on my first time modding I needed to reinstall because I destroyed my original game files, your game could be corrupt but I'm sure you would've been told that so it may have been something you installed

It's a character that I have been playing for a few weeks now. I've had those mods installed from the very start, not touched or updated anything. But it isn't just those saves that are corrupt, if I try to load any save or start a new game then the same thing happens.
If you are on Windows 10 try running the game as administrator, one of the more recent feature updates changed something that causes Oblivion to fail when trying to access certain legacy features it relies on.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Please let us know if this makes the game run properly.

Here is a thread discussing various ideas to solve this problem.

This problem appears to be due to steam, not oblivion. There are some work arounds, but I haven't encountered the problem so I can't say which works from experience.

on my windows 10 computer, I had a similar issue, launching the game and trying to load a save from the main menu resulted in a crash on and off at random (sometimes it would load fine, other times just crash back to steam).
The only workaround that consistently got the game loaded was to launch the game, get to the main menu, start a new game, skip through the character creation process, then hit escape and reload my last save. It's like loading directly from the main menu is bugged/can be bugged or something. I didn't experience this on my windows 7 computer.
maybe this workaround will help you, it's obviously not ideal, but I only had to do it once after launching the game, from then on, I could save/reload over and over without any crashes. however, each time I exited the game, I had to repeat the process upon the initial launch. good luck!

I'm not very tech savy, but I'd like to at least document my finding. I was having the same issues. I would click play on the launcher and a small square in the corner would pop up and then the game would stop before it went fullscreen as if I hadn't clicked on it at all.

I went into options on the launcher and looked at the windowed/fullscreen options just to fiddle around a see if I could have a better idea of how the game stopped worked while in windowed. The game played to my surprise.

I further experimented and found that fullscreen works as well, but it's that V. Sync checkbox that is the culprit somehow. If that's clicked off. I have no issue getting the game started.

Do with this info as you will, fellows :dungdefender:
