From that book you know that you'll be looking at some kind of "light from the sky" at certain times... but I honestly don't remember if there's some dialogue or mention of the fact that it only it's possible to progress at certain times of the week.
The note that Bothiel gives[2] you lists locations and ends with:
So at least it's spelled out that it is a one-time-per-week event, except you don't know which day... so waiting for it to happen follows from that, I'd guess.
There's also the note[3] you can find on the necromancers themselves that explains the ritual and how to do it.

EDIT: When I had to do this quest on my current character (on which I'm RP-ing so I try to stay within in-character knowledge) I went to one of the locations mentioned in Bothiel note and made camp nearby there (using Maskar's Camping mod...) in the mountains where I can easily see the area below, and proceeded to stay there until the event happened, during the day I explored the areas around (there was a mine and an ayleid ruin...) and also read some books and stuff.
I have a mod that makes time pass when your in the menus, so in the end making time pass was easy and I avoided using the Wait function :)
I appreciate the effort but haven't opened them to avoid spoilers;-)
I will just play the game then,I have a very similar playstyle then you,it will be fun!
On top of MOO and camping i use Basic Needs...i better find a camping spot with a toilet:-))
But don't worry you'll get all the referenced books and notes during normal play... Remember to actually read them, though!
I think some of them get removed from your inv if you proceed thru the quest too fast (but I may be wrong, don't quote on that :)) and can miss reading them.
And yeah! I also use Maskar's Basic Primary Needs... and I was using Craftybits for immersive cooking, which I did while I was in the camping spot waiting for the Shade to happen, but in the end I had to remove that one as it wasn't working too well :(
Now I cook with Maskar's Overhaul implementation, that works perfectly!
No worries, you just openly wrote general infos, just enough to let me know everything is in game....I RP as id we met in a bar in Bruma;-)
Gotta love Maskar, can you believe he stil answers every single question on the forums? What a guy!
