Personally I use the Stoker Wolf Mod he's mostly a pack mule for me as I can summon him with a spell no matter where I am and he can heal me (up to half) and carry unlimited amounts as well as being backup in any major fight.
That brother will keep his essential status, and will be your follower. Then you can reverse pickpocket bound armour/weapons onto him if you feel the need, since he will likely have iron armour
