The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

No music
A couple of months ago I had a problem where Oblivion wouldn't play a single track from the entirity of the soundtrack. I didn't bother to look up a solution back then because I didn't have time to play games anyway so I delayed it. Some time has passed so I decided to reinstall Oblivion, currently laying on my hard disk with no mods ... and still no music. Everything else sounds just fine, the sound effects, the voices, all except for the music.

I tried playing with sliders and I have also checked the Oblivion.ini file and yes bMusic is set to 1. I'm at a loss and I'm incurring to Steam because I'm completely clueless and don't know what to do anymore. Any help is much appreciated.

Sounds weird. (no pun intended). Is there a music folder in the Data folder of your Oblivion folder ??
Fuyu Jun 5, 2018 @ 8:41pm
Yes, there is. All music files are also there and work just fine when played on a music player.

Hmmm, have you tried verifying file integrity or perhaps deleting the Oblivion.ini file ??

I'm back empty-handed. I installed K-Lite Codec Pack and nothing has changed. The other programs are old and don't support Windows 10 as far as I'm aware, which is the OS that I'm trying to run Oblivion on, and I have no clue how to twinkle with the DirectShow registries in a way that'll allow me to fix this because there are no false/true nor 0/1 nor activated/deactivated options there, it's all code.

Could someone help me to try the first solution listen on that website? Or tell me about a mod that could possibly fix this?

Beats me as to how you'd "manually" tweak the DirectShow registries. If K-Lite's corrections didn't sort it for you, then I'm more inclined to think the problem lies elsewhere.

You mentioned that you first had this problem "a couple of months ago". Was that the first time you tried to play the game on your current computer, or was it actually working on that system before that? If it ever worked on this system, what can you think of that might've changed since then?

Which "hard disk" is the game installed to? The one containing Windows and Steam, or a different one?

Which copy of Oblivion.ini did you check? The one in the game's installation directory (which the game doesn't actually read from - that's just a template), or the one in your Documents folder?

Prior to installing Win10 Oblivion worked just fine, and yes I checked the one in the game's folder. Your question now makes me want to try and check out the one in Documents.

It's in its regular location, Program Files(x86)/Steam/commonapps/Oblivion.

EDIT: The one in Documents also has bMusic=1.

Given that the OS change seems to've been the trigger for you, the game's probably correctly installed and configured.

Searching around, I reckon this thread's suggestion to install AC3Filter might be your best bet.

I don't know if it's because I started Oblivion with AC3Filter on, but now the audio plays. I am currently running Oblivion without it on background and the audio plays. This is wonderful! Why isn't this in the list of possible solutions on uesp .net?

Thank you so much for helping me. I thought I'd have to format my PC and go back to Win7 if I couldn't fix this issue.

Glad to hear you got it going. :) I've gone ahead and added the AC3Filter link to the wiki article.

Sorry for the necroposting, but I'm having this same problem with Oblivion's music, and nothing seems to work to resolve it.

I've tried everything suggested in the wiki, but nothing worked so far. I've also tried reinstalling the original Realtek Audio Drivers, but that didn't work too.

Can anyone help me? One of my favourite things in TES games are the soundtracks, I'd hate being forced to play the whole game without one.

I'm running I'm running some mods (nothing that touches the audio though) and I'm playing on Windows 10.

I just have to say, although I'm sure this thread is old - I've been using Vortex with a lot of mods, and for some reason - my music just disabled itself in the file. Didn't even know that was a thing, so I appreciate that right off the bat because I didn't think a simple google of "Oblivion music not work" was going to return me with anything helpful.

Also the name kills me.
I had the same problem and I just set audio settings in game to deafult, and i worked for me

I had no music running on Window's 10 x64, and downloading the latest version of AC3Filter fixed it for me. https://sourceforge.net/projects/ac3filter/

Just download, install, and you are good to go.

Hope this helps!
