Oblivion - stopped working for reasons unknown

i had been happily playing Oblivion for hours (over the course of a week), changed nothing in the game (no new mods, didn't remove mods) and suddenly right after Bethesda's logo, it crashes. i've done everything suggested all over the web (created a new oblivion.ini file, verified files, reinstalled the game, tried playing with mods turned off - you get the idea). Basically short of uninstalling everything and starting fresh.
It is a modded game, but i pretty well followed Bevilex' mod list, which is mainly textures, with a handful of my own selections.
This started last night (Monday), if that information is relevant. Has anyone had this happen before? Does anyone have a fix other than starting fresh.

nothing i know as of yet. ive started fresh 3 times. uninstalles skyrom, my modmanger for oblivion as well as the organizer. basically nothing connected to oblivion and it still crashes before or during the bethesda logo for me. so starting fresh may or may not work for you

That doesn't bode well. And just the other day i was boasting at how stable the game had been, even with all the mods.

Its possible the April feature update for Windows 10 could've borked fullscreen for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas... running in window mode seems to work for me till something else is found to fix it properly

even in windowed mode, soon as i start oblivion up, it still seems to crash, so it may be a thing we gotta wait for on windows side to fix if it does turn out to be a windows error. past that, not sure what else can fix this. tried windowed, tried on every quality, hdr, bloom and none selected for each. i got nothing on how to fix this.

I may have another possible solution... go into steam settings --> "In-game" --> Disable Use the Big Picture Overlay..... Full screen is now working for me

Wasnt a issue for me before the update for Windows 10 but now it is for like old-ish games now

If it still doesnt work then its different problem than mine

Thanks for the solution ideas. Unfortunately, after trying them it still crashes right after the Bethesda logo. i would think if the issue were related to the Windows 10 update, more people would be having issues too.

Plus, i just checked and Windows last updated on my computer at the beginning of April, and i've been able to successfully play the game since then.

It could possibly be a steam update issue. Past that, I cant think of a single thing that would cause this ctd. Espepially seeing as how count has been playjng until very recently. In my case its foreseeable as I did modding in the wrong order. But counts? I dont see anything.other than a steam client update that wluld cause this.

That's possible, that thing is always updating.

i'm not quite ready to give up, delete everything and try again from scratch, especially if it ends up being unrelated to the game or mods.

It's frustrating because TES4Edit says everything is fine. the mods are BOSS organized and everything was installed with WryeBash. It was working, then just stopped. It's right at that point between the logo and before the menu screen, there's a short loading pause and it's like whatever it's attempting to load just says "no". i had thought it might be a corrupt save, but i removed the save folder and it still crashed. Unless it's pulling the save from the Cloud, in which case i don't know what do.

No probs. Its better to try and keep up to date but yeah I doubt its something related to mods or the game itself. Was working the whole time tried moddi g and I'm on square one. Everything oblivion related, from wyre, and the kther stuff for kidding, to saves and everything else I deleted, so this is straight up fully fresh stock game and it isnt working the 3-4 times I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

Actully the game plays fine. BUT, that also depends on the OS too. Like WIN10 for example, that OS isn't really game playing PC softwear. That is really tablet/smartphone softwear. How ever in WIN 7 it runs fairly good, and even better in XP. Which is why I use 3 hard drives. Bcause when it comes to games, well WIN10 isn't all that..

My most recent attempt, based on advice in one of many "Oblivion doesn't work" threads.

"Go to the game files. Change "OblivionLauncher.exe" to any other name. Change "Oblivion.exe" to "OblivionLauncher.exe". This worked for me on win10"

Might work for some (apparently it did), but it did not work for me.

has anything changed where the game is playable yet? ive ran out of fix ideas for this game. i love oblivion, love the mods for it too and i would love to play it more T_T any fixes at all or we waiting on steam client update and hoping for the best?

Oh I see, I am sorry, I was thinking of Oblivion lost mod.. my bad...

Its all good. But yeah no, oblivion itself has just straight up stopped working. It crashes soon as start up, even with stock game. Like everyrhing oblivion has been deleted, and then I reinstall oblivion and still nothing

i bit the bullet and ended up uninstalling everything and reinstalling it totally fresh, including the mods. It works now, but for how long?

So, ultimately, no fix worked for me other than redoing the whole thing. i was playing around with Midas Magic before i had this issue. Maybe there was a problem with that mod?

Very least I'm glad you got a fix for yours. Ill wait for the next steam update and hope for the best, sonce I havent even the faintest idea whats wrong with mine.
