How's fun/good is magic?
It's been awhile since I've played Oblivion. Thinking of playing it again and I might try out a magic character. Just curious as to how it is in this game.

its pretty fun when you know the ins and outs of making spells also don't underestimate staves for offensive weapons and magic scales all the way into the end game even on max difficulty

I'd also suggest checking out a few of the magic mods.

I'm not sure I'd call it fun, but it's certainly less tedious than other forms of combat. As for good, I'd say it's y=2^x good, where x is how many times you cast weakness to magic 100%.

Probably the most fun in terms of Vanilla game.

you dont need this "free hands" system skyrim implemented, you can hold a 2her and still cast spells without it disrupting the flow of the game. magic is one of the fun things in oblivion, and you can have as much fun to make near broken spells late game. I would recommend using any type of hotkey mod that extends the 1-9 slots so you can use dozens of spells in the heat of combat https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/34735

this is just one, but it lets you assign combinations of spells/items to a single hotkey, you can also set up autocasting, which works by swapping to the assigned spell, casting it immeditately, then reverts back to the spell you had before (this is awesome for keeping your active spell and not fiddling around with menus and not needing to press C for every time you swap, basically saves you from having to use macros)

I would say it is better than skyrims.

Sure you can't "dual wield" magic, but you can make your own spells. Also magic scales better in oblivion than it does in skyrim and you can use it without having to unequip your weapon.

Magic-wise - it's better than Skyrim but not as good as Morrowind. It's still really fun though.

but you cant make spells in skyrim

Magic works great because it's on a sep key from shield/wep. The down side is that sustained spells (like summon) last way to short.

Which doesn't matter if you mastered each school of magic which happens way quicker than anything else.

I always suggest Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod for this game. It changes a lot (especially the horrible level scaling system), but more relevant to the OP's question, it adds a lot more spells than you get in vanilla and they're all balanced.

Playing as a mage in Oblivion is a lot of fun. Hybrid classes can be tons of fun as well, especially if you're a roleplayer.

try making your own spells its fun to make them

Magic System in Oblivion is broken... Like completely. It is counterpart to useless magic in Skyrim.

Not with Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul...

It's not even broken in vanilla Oblivion. You can make your own spells to fit your needs.
