I tried to start a new game by uninstalling my mods and deleting my saves through Wrye Bash, but other than that I don't think I've done anything that would have caused this.
Usually when wanting to uninstall a bunch of mods and install others instead it's recommended to start over with a clean install. Anyway if you want to avoid all that work, which I can certainly understand I'd suggest you do this as test:
Backup your install do a different folder, then uninstall and manually make sure everything is deleted. After that to a fresh install and install only OBSE and the OBSE Tester and see if that works. If it does, then you know for sure something went wrong when replacing your mods.
Wyre Bash is often considered the best choice for all true experts, but it has more issues than it's fans admit. Too much can go wrong when merging mods and such. Personally I just used the TesModManager for my current install.
Either way good luck! I've been thinking about trying Morrowblivion after my current run through Oblivion and would love to hear that you got it to work and how.
Yes try that anyway. Always install a few mods then testrun then add more, so that you can isolate the culprit if anything is the matter. If it works with just OBSE and the OBSE Tester I'd suggest adding all the other OBSE plugins like Silent Voice, etc those mods that come as .dll files and need to go into the OBSE folder next and run that before doing anything else. And if it does, backup that folder.
If you don't want the annoying scripted interruption playing while testing a configuration use this clean save: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/43403/
Puts you just at the exit of the sewers
That said I also have an issue with my current mod-heavy Oblivion install, namely that when I need to load a savegame where I was some areas removed from where I died the game crashes on my and I need to start afresh. Minor annoyance that I don't bother fixing since the game uses over 2GB memory whenever that happens, meaning I don't think it can be.
Now as for that's releveant to your issues: I might be that you are simply using too heavy a mod load for the engine to handle. Have you applied the 4GB patch to oblivion exe?
Alternatively it could be that some of the Oblivion mods you use, just don't play nicely with Morroblivion. If it's that I can't help you. I'd suggest making an account at the Morroblivion Forum and asking for help there.
ah but then skyrim uses 100% its own engine... just ignore me :P
