Is this game for rpg beginners?
I've never played an rpg game so I'm looking for a good one for my first experiences. Is Oblivion for beginners or should I better buy Morrowind?

skyrim is for beginners.you are thinking in the reverse way. morrowind is the true rpg, meaning it sticks more closely to the fundamental aspects of an rpg and fantasy world, but also harder. skyrim is the one for beginners in the sense that it is dumbed down more than morrowind and oblivion. this is not to say that skyrim is a dumb game or anything

Okay thank you but unfortunately my GPU is too low for skyrim...so do you think oblivion is more for an rpg beginner like me or could I start with morrowind too (I heard it's better than oblivion)

Oh, geez. O.k. it's like this - Oblivion is a fantastic kickarse rpg. I don't know if I'd ever call it a great beginner rpg, though. The reason being is that Oblivion has a very quirky way that it deals with scaling the world around you as you level up. I bet it would be very frustrating to someone who doesn't know the ES:IV system well. If you're used to modding your games, I think it could be made into a good beginner game, but right out of the box, I'm afraid I'd have to say it's not. Which is something coming from someone who has come to like Oblivion as much as I have.
HTH!

If your computer specs are low, start with Morrowind. It's a great game, but it has it's flaws (swinging at rats and missing). Oblivion is my favorite. You can try Oblivion or Skyrim, just reduce the visual effects (grass/shadows/waters etc). Morrowind is great if you like to read alot.

This, basically.

As you progress in level, you run into these damage fortresses called monsters and enemy NPCs. You can easily find yourself outclassed because the gameworld levels with you. There are ways around this, but they require more intimate knowledge of how the system works, or mod use (also not for true beginners).

Having said that, it's very possible to have an enjoyable experience as a beginner. You can always come here to ask for help!

This was one of my beginner RPGs from back in the day. It's a perfect game to start off with. The world scaling isn't a big problem like these guys are making it out to be but as long as you follow the main quest for a while you'll be perfect.

Morrowind is really for die hard RPG fans, as it's very dated and a lot of mechanics are hard to get into for a while.

Don't overthink it. Oblivion is pretty okay for beginners. It has its balance cons, which you can "fix" installing mods, but I'd suggest to start playing vanilla (unmodded) game. Not a big deal really.
Just don't start with Morrowind, you'll probably drop it. It's dated by all means.

The only scaling problem I ever had was that my dedicated sword fighter couldn’t take on harder enemies as the game progressed. My 100% mage (Magic Johnson) found that the world got easier the higher he levelled, however

So long as you use lots of skills that aren’t necessarily in your major 7, things should be ok. You don’t want to level up those 7 too much faster than all the rest

if want beginner rpg it mostly depens 1 on the type of rpg you enjoy
rpg tend to take roudn 200+ h to complet if they somewhat bigger
some rpg are easier and some harder
rpg is mostly a synonym to take time to explorer and discover the story of that rpg. and you will also have to combat train your characters more or less (this parts tends to be time consuming)
depending on what rpg you play

the rpg genre has a few sub types

tactical strategy rpg like Baldurs Gate series, Planescape Torment, and fewe more like fallout 1 and fallout 2, system shock

action rpg daggherfall, morrowind, oblivion, Skryim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and so on

and there there is the whole jrpg... one of the in final fantasy series , seceret of mana, tales of Zestiria, tales of Basara and so forth....

a bunch older RPG games run easier on older hardware due to consumeing less resources
good example elderscrollls daggerfall, fallout 1 fallout 2 and alot many more.....

if you want a more true RPG experience in the elder scrolls go play daggerfall. its free too
The games, which let you really roleplay a character are most of the time one of the hardest games to play (like Fallout 1, Baldurs Gate or Arcanum). Planescape Torment isn't combat heavy, but you read a lot. Like a big book. At least I can't think of a easy on right now. Oh. yes I do: Star wars Knights of the old Republic. If building a character is too complex and hard for you there's a recommed button. It has a beginner turtorial and so on and Kotor let you roleplay (but it's from bioware so except mostly two extremes :"I'm a samarita, take all my money and live happily" and "I'm sooooo evil I even won't you tell my name muhahahaha"). Of course you can roleplay in Oblivion too, but your choices are very limited. It boils down to which type of class you want to play (like knight, thief, archer and mage. yes "and". In the end you can do everything in one playthrough)
Tl:dr
Oblivion is a fine choice, you could take a look at Kotor1, but beware of many bugs and save corruption (means you should save in multiple slots)
Oblivion was my first RPG game and it wa awesome, spent my whole childhood on this game. So yeah this game is good for beginners. Fallout is good too.

I would not recommend this for an RPG beginner or even a TES beginner. Oblivion is a great entry point into the series because it's right between RPG and Action, allowing you to branch off to Morrowind and Skyrim equally easily - and then from Morrowind, you can branch off to Arena, then Daggerfall.

Morrowind was actually my entry point and it was so overhyped that I almost lost hope in the series. After playing Oblivion, though, not only did it get me hooked on the series, but once I got over my initial anger, I was able to enjoy Morrowind for what it was, not what people claimed it was.
Oblivion is pretty intuitive to play, and straddles the line between Action Game and RPG pretty well. You should be ok as a beginner.

The main hurdle to deal with in Oblivion is the Enemy Level Scaling aspect of the game. This has not been optimised properly at all, and a lot of people can find themselves almost at a road block around level 20 or so, due to the quality of enemies suddenly ramping up faster than they can adapt to it.

In addition, certain enemies that were easily defeated at level 1, become damage sponges later on, because their HP is calculated as a multiple of your current level. For e.g. : Some enemies [such as Goblins] can have literally 20x the HP at level 20, than they did at level 1. Meanwhile, player damage during the time between levels 1-20 does not increase nearly as much, and what was once an easy fight with these sorts of enemies becomes a total slog.

There are ways around this problem of scaling. For one, the difficulty slider in-game works by increasing/decreasing the damge that you deal to enemies and vice versa, so this can simply be tuned down later in the game to make the fights less of a slog fest.

There's also a bajillion mods that have been developed for this game [most of the posts on this forum concern mods], and it's possible to carefully select a few mods that deal specifically with the Level Scaling aspect of the game and make it more balanced, without altering the Base Game too much. I personally am not very knowledgeable about these, but I'm sure others can comment.

As for a choice between Oblivion and Morrowind: I would personally start with Morrowind and work your way forward [you get to view the evolution of Elder Scrolls games that way haha], but Morrowind is more of an RPG than an Action game [as well as having its' own quirks], and probably harder to get into as a beginner than Oblivion. Oblivion is definitely more beginner friendly.

it was my first RPG i had a hard time getting into mass effect but found this and was instantly entranced i have nearly 4000 hours on XBOX 360 lol

it CAN be for beginners, just would reccomend taking it slow, its not as harsh as morrowind but its not as simple as skyrim its a pretty decent dose of RPG and depending on how you respond to it it may be quite an amazing game or a bad experience , its not a bad game just some people have issues, but you also have a chat support here :P
