Also you can get a mod to chek containers (i think it's called "is it safe"
I put things in there all the time nd they never dissapear. But that could just be me going back to get them before they do.
Though ive kept an alot in there for long periods of time im talking putting things in there when i was level ten and they were still there at lvl 50.
There is a chest with a very hard lock in the Imperial City that you can use after an action, but anymore information would spoil it for you.
You can drop stuff in front of a city gate or in a low area, and it will stay there. The house in Leyawiin comes with no furniture so I just backed into a corner and dropped big ticket stuff until I haggled the merchant down to a reasonable price for furnishings.
I've dropped stuff inside of caves and ruins for awhile when overburdened or nearly. Just remember the physics and know that stuff will roll or slide downhill, so pick a low spot.
There is a quest in a city that gives you access to a lodge. There's another during the main quest that gives you access to a different lodge.
There is a hollow tree stump in a garden area of the Market district. It's used in a later quest. I've never tried using it, so put something cheap in there and check back in a week or so.
If you have the DLC, you can do the Battlehorn quest. But only the chests in the bedroom and by the entrance stairs leading to the basement and wine cellar are safe. Many containers in the basement respawn the contents.
Frostcrag Spire has a safe chest and dresser in the living quarters.
With respect to Anvil and other cities, always remember, 'let the buyer beware' .
Weightwise, some heavy ingredients weigh a lot less when combined to make a potion. And don't forget feather spells and enchanted armor and jewelry. Selling potions is good way to get quick relatively easy cash, too.
All the containers in Deepscorn Hollow are safe to use, if you have the DLC.
If you're unsure whether a chest is safe to use for storage remove the contents and replace with something you'll remember putting in there and don't mind losing (I use a single arrow). If it's still there after three game days then the chest should be safe to use.
Some of the sacks don't respawn contents but the crates and barrels do. I usually make a round of containers in the Market, Talos, Waterfront, Imperial Prison and later the Arcane University during the early part of the game looking for stuff to sell and repair hammers.
I've lot stuff one of the first games I played by putting stuff in a barrel inside one of the Mage's Guilds. Don't remember, but I think it's every 7 game days.
