Is this a glitch?
Something strange seems to be happening. I'm doing Azura's quest, in Gutted Cave; not far from the entrance, I'm attacked by two vamps. OK, that's not a problem in itself, but...suddenly, my sword is gone. And I don't mean just not in my hand anymore, but *gone*; not in my hand, not on the ground, not in my inventory...just GONE, permanently. Is this a known glitch, or is it somehow *supposed* to happen? If it's supposed to happen, then...why? Do vamps have some power I don't know about? By the way, I've saved and reloaded several times, including going back to the previous save and approaching the mine from the very beginning, and it happens every time. Does anybody know anything about this? It's really frustrating, and I could really use some help. Thanks.

I don’t know how to fix this, but I can tell you it’s definitely not by design.

Thanks, Chase.I have to hope that *somebody* knows why it happens, under what circumstances, and how I can avoid it. Trying to punch out two attacking vampires is not fun. It frustrates almost to the point of giving up the game, if it's going to make it impossible to complete the quests. Again, thanks. I appreciate the good nature and helpfulness of all the folks on here (and their patience with my several stupid questions.

Just go in the cave with a random weapon and wait to the bug with the random sword and switch you original sword do you try this?

Well there are ways enemies can cause you to drop your sword in the game.

Aswell as it is a common glitch that when weapons are thrown from npcs when you kill them they actually glitch and fall into the ground. Its probably possible for it to happen with your weapon.

That would be my best guess. The enemy is using a disarm move spell whatever and your weapon glitched and fell through ground.

The problem with that is that the game won't let you switch or equip weapons in the middle of combat, and the bad guys aren't sufficiently polite to let you leave combat while you prepare a new weapon. There's gotta be a way to deal with this - by this time, the company *must* have heard about it, from players, and must have figured out a way to fix it. Does anybody know if there's a patch or something for this?

You're welcome. I'll suggest entering the cave with multiple weapons in your inventory. Do not have anything equipped though. Try hot-keying the weapons for easy access. Once you are attacked, equip a weapon and see what happens. If you sword just disappears then try another one. If it too disappears, you definitely have a serious problem. As was mentioned, enemies can strike you and cause you to drop your weapons and sometimes when this occurs, dropped items may clip through the floor. Tray again and follow these steps.

I wasnt giving you a solution to fixing the problem I was giving you a suggestion of what possibly could be causing your weapon to dissapear.

If this is actually the case the solution would be to prevent the vampires from disarming you. Therefor your weapon would never glitch into the ground.

And companies only support the game for a period of time. Once they stop supporting any and all glitches and bugs that still remain unfixed is permanant. It will always be in the game.

I will say this, bethesda games are notorious for being riddled with bugs and glitches to such a degree that it's almost literally impossible to nab them all, ESPECIALLY for a game that's 13 years old with the company currently putting all of their efforts towards new projects, as a previous poster said.

I agree with every1's assessment, it sounds to me like you were disarmed and your weapon unfortunately just clipped through the ground. But it does sound weird that this happens literally every single time, as you say. What I would like you to do is a little experiment though to see if it is the vampires. When you enter the cave immediately open the console and use the kill command on the vampires and then proceed as normal, a little unorthodox but if your weapon still remains in your hand then we can pretty much verify that it's something those particular vampires do that messes with your weapon.

A little more information though would be nice, what kind of weapon is it? What's the weapon health? Do you have any mods installed? If the weapon is mega low health it's very possible that it has broken during combat and becomes literally unusable until it's repaired. With that though it should still be in your inventory (I think, been a while since Ive had a busted weapon) but will be shaded out and unable to equip until repaired.

Sure it does. You can't switch out a sword while you're actively swinging it, but "combat" won't stop you, per se.

Assuming you're being disarmed, an excessively high frame rate could cause the game's physics engine to bug out and send the weapon flying through the ground. Or... one of the vampires could simply be grabbing it. NPCs will do that, if they don't spawn with weapons of their own.

This is important - if it's something like Dawnfang/Duskfang, the vampires might not have anything to do with it.

Correct, busted weapons should stick around.

Even if the weapon has a reasonable amount of durability, some NPCs can cast spells that'll damage it much faster than usual.

I actually hadn't considered that, also a very likely outcome

This could be an undocumented bug. I had the same thing happen during one of the Shivering Isles quests. I'm guessing I was disarmed during combat, but I couldn't find it afterwards. It's possible this happened right at dusk or dawn. I didn't find anything on the Wikis about this.
I had to load a previous save and used Wizard's Fury instead.

There's a similar bug in the quest, When the Vow Breaks. Sometimes the quest item falls along the seam between the wall and floor and can't be retrieved, or it just disappears. Had to do reloads until I could finally take it.
