Training by Baurus
Do you have to join the Blades faction in order for Baurus to give you the Blade, Block and Heavy Armor skill boosts? I've just restarted the game and opted not to join the Blades when Jauffre gave me the chance and I can't seem to get Baurus to train me.

You have to progress to when you get the quest "Dagon Shrine" for him to train you.

So yes.

UPDATE: forgot I had to escape the Dagon Shrine before he would train me, but I still haven't "joined" the Blades faction; I turned Jauffre down when he offered to let me join.
