NPC Speech gone!

Oblivion has stopped playing NPC speech. I've made sure audio settings are set to default (which has speech turned up) and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but no change. How do I get speech back?

Have you tried reloading a save back to when it was working? Also verifying the integrity of the game files might help.

Reloading a save from when it was working doesn't help - speech still missing. How do I verify the integrity of the game files? (Note that I still get *some* NPC speech - shopkeepers still say "take care" or whatever when I finish with them, for example.)

Right click on the game in your library, click properties, local files, and then click "verify integrity of game files"

Do you have any mods installed? I just remembered that I used to have a mod installed that was supposed to help with fps stuttering but ended up removing all impact sounds of weapons and casting sounds of spells.

No, no mods, just Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine.

Are you using headphones? If you are you might try plugging in some speakers instead, headphones have a tendency to have weird problems like random types of audio cutting out, especially with games.
