The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Question about weapon damage
I'm not sure I understand how to work out weapon damage.
So, for every weapon there are 4 values:
1) price;
2) weight;
3) damage;
4) durability;

The damage value should be an indicator of the amount of damage each weapon does.
But in game every weapon has got the same amount (apart from weapon made of special materials)

At the beginning of the game, when I was in the sewers I had I steel sword, a dagger and an axe. Every one of them with damage value of 1. They had different weights so I thought to equip the lighter so to be faster (still not getting what's the point of a heavier weapon though) but the i realized that to kill a rat with a dagger it takes more blows than to killing it with a sword.
So there is obviously something wrong or that I don't get.

Can someone kindly explain me?

Do you have any effects that affect damage output?

No but I don't get how that relates to my question.

I just don't get how to work out the damage value of every weapon in the inventory as they have all the same number.
I don't know if my question is clear:

The weapons have all the same damage value and this is clearly wrong.
Just the silver dagger I just got has a damage value of 2. All the rest of the weapons have 1.

Ah, I asked because sometimes certain effects (like diseases) can lower damage for weapons.

It sounds like this is your first time playing, so I don't think mods are the culprit...

Does magic deal appropriate damage? iirc Flames should deal about 8 damage, or is it just weapons?

Well any spell has its specific amount of damage dealt specified in the description. They're all different.

When you look at your inventory what damage value has a steel shorts word or an axe? What value has a dagger?

Mine have all 1 but they don't deal the same damage. I just can't get what's wrong.
So, for example, I'm looking at my inventory right now. I've got
iron dagger: price 6, weight, 3, damage 1.
Iron war axe: price 13, weight 12, damage 1.

So what's the point of equipping an axe when I can have a cheaper and lighter weapon that deals same damage?

That's obviously broken or I don't get something.

Your weapons damage is going to depend on your skills, strength and the base damage of the weapon itself. I believe there can be decimals or weapons damage. When you do multiple attacks with one weapon, it probably adds up to the sum of those decimals included in the damage value of the weapon, so it may do more than what you see on the inventory screen.

When it comes to choosing a weapon, you want the one that has the highest DPS, and because of that a short sword or a Longsword will usually do more damage than an axe. If you choose a blunt weapon, I would recommend a mace.

Here is a chart that has most of the weapon values including their base damage. That can be a lot higher then what you may be able to do currently, but you will get there eventually if you figure out how. Good luck!

Base damage is what the OP's confused about, as their weapons are all reading as having a lower base damage than what it should be. According to UESP, the base damage for those particular weapons are supposed to be higher. Everything else is how it's supposed to be, but that damage is severely borked.

In the chart on your link every weapon has got at different damage value and that makes completely sense but in my inventory they have all they same number. Which value do you have in your inventories?

It’s called weapon rating, which is linked in the formulae I just posted. That, should help answer your question.

No, that doesn't answer to my question. In my inventory weapons have all the same weapon rating. How is it in your inventory?

That's my question. I read about game mechanics before posting. I don't need to have anything else explained apart from why in my inventory there is no difference between weapons damage wise?

The damage shown in your inventory is the damage you will do with that weapon. It is NOT the weapon's (by itself) damage. At low levels of strength and weapon skill most weapons do the same amount of damage - basically 1, sometimes 2. Even the most powerful weapons in the game do only a few points of damage with no skill and low strength.
The same also applies to armor, but with different skills/attribute.
Right. That's more clear now.

So, shall I use a dagger cause it's lighter while I don't deal much more damage with a sword?

For weapons which deal the same amount of damage per strike, you're usually better off choosing the one with the better strike speed - unless range is an issue for you. Swords reach further than daggers.
I'm playing as an agent khajit. So my main weapon is the bow (he's got no skill in melee weapons).
My playstyle is mostly made of stealth ranged attacks and then I take advantage of my speed running away (freezing enemies with spells if necessary) and shoot them several times with the bow.
I really use melee weapons rarely.
I've never tried a stealth melee attack as I'm just level 2 and not so high sneak level yet.
Does a dagger deal more damage while undetected?
I meant "does a dagger deal more damage than a sword when undetected?"

I think so, yes. I believe it would do 6x damage (what it says on screen), as opposed to 4x damage. Have fun!

Mmm that's interesting. Where did you read it?

Thank you anyway 😊
