Depends heavily on your class and what you've been doing. If you were doing dialogue heavy quests it's normal. If you have been delving in dungeons and fighting primarily, then you probably use too few of your class skills.

If I remember rightly you gain a level for every 10 skill increases to one of you major skills. Say you have blade and block as major skills, you could increase blade by 8 and block by 2 and gain a level after sleeping. Use your major skills often to gain levels, special abilites and access powers.

specialisation makes a difference,eg Fighter will lvl up faster when....you guessed it fighting,if your sneaking around then you won't lvl up unless you chose Steath

Of couse as stated your major skills will increase your lvl...don't be in too much of a rush Will O Wisps are deadly at lvl 10

Leveling in this game is kind of wonky. You only level up when some combination of the seven skills you chose as your major skills increase by 10. Increasing non-major skills does nothing to level you, but it does allow you to increase your stats once you've leveled, proportionate to the number of skill increases of skills that are governed by that stat.

This also means, you can level too FAST, if you're major skills are something you do often, like simply running around (Athletics). This is bad, because the entire game world levels up with you and if you level too many times two quickly, your overall stats will suffer and the game actually gets HARDER as you level up.

It sounds backwards, but the best thing to do to level efficiently is always create a custom class and choose for your major skills things you won't be using very much, so you can intentionally increase them when it's time to level, to ensure you get +5 stat bonuses.

Some skills are slower to level up too, like if you go conjuring you'll probably use that once per fight and that won't make you level up the skill as fast as say bashing the ennemy 20 times with your weapon.

Anyway, as above, the game levels up with you. Your actual skill level is more important than your level.

Per the wiki, you actually get ~12x as much experience from a Conjuring spell then you do landing a melee hit in combat...assuming you didn't spec or major skill either of them.

It depends on the difficulty in which you play. Personnaly I set it up pretty much to the max and played 1 handed conjurer. I can tell you my conjuring was lagging behind my 1 handed because dremora or trolls would take forever to kill. So yes each blow gives less exp than 1 spell but I would give more than 12 blows per summon, thus 1 handed would level up faster.

That probably explains the 12 to 1 discrepency then, since you're correct, your minions don't become weaker like you do on the higher difficulty settings. Although it seems that conjuring a bound weapon gets the same experience as conjuring a dremora and having it fight for you. Could probably level it pretty quickly by conjuring and sheathing a weapon repeatedly.

This is a good place to train melee, magic or archery.
