Permanent Retirement & the bodyguard

I'm doing the Dark Brotherhood quest Permanent Retirement, and I have a problem. I can kill the target OK, but getting the ring from the body is a problem, because of the bodyguard. To get the ring, I have to approach the body (rather than just going invisible and sneaking off). When I do that, of course, the bodyguard attacks, forcing me to kill *him* too. And when I do *that*, I wind up with every guard in the universe on my butt. The Prima strategy guide suggests that if one comes back a bit later, one hears about the guard's suicide, so there has to be a way to do the mission without killing the guard. Has anybody ever actually *accomplished* that? And if so, *how*? Once again, I'd appreciate any help anybody can give me. Thanks, folks.

that's Adamus Phillida finger ? just wait the gaurd will go walking off if you stay hidden,takes about 20 minutes usually

make sure you have the Unofficial patch installed as there's a few bugs in this quest

There are many places you can go to kill him without the bodyguard being around. Ambushing him in his sleeping quarters located in the barracks is a good spot for example.

Thanks folks, but....Chaos Epoch, there are always guards around, where the target sleeps, as far as I can see. And Porkchop, a question: Does Adamus' body just float there? Can I leave and come back in 20 minutes and get the ring? (I assume it's 20 minutes *game* time, isn't it?) They don't take the ring from his corpse, to give it to someone else, when he's dead? yeah, just don't go into the water while the guards nearby,that seems to trigger him to attack,i usually hide behind a building and practice Mystisism until he leaves,i think i killed him once in that building outside of Leyawiin,but he is above your lvl ,so it's a hard kill

Don't leave it for a day and come back the body sometimes disappears

He has his own custom room in there. Directly in front of the barracks opening you'll find a door indicating as such.

Chaos, I promise I'm not being diffucult - dumb, maybe - but I'm not sure what you mean by "the barracks opening". Do you mean the door from Leyawin into the barracks? If so, I don't see the door you're talking about. There are stairs leading up to the living quarters (always full of guards), and a couple of doors downstairs, that I've looked into, to no avail. Where's his private room? Sorry to be stupid, but...can't help it; I was born that way.

Wait until nightfall, sneak into the barracks and simply shoot him with the rose. It may take one or two attempts to get in without being noticed due to guards walking around when you enter. Or Illusion spells.

I just ran in, waited until he took his armor off, shot him with the arrow, ran up to his body, took his ring, and ran out of the city. I got caught and paid like 1000 gold to get out of it but it worked
