ignore goblin and animal caves. most profitable are vampires and marauders. and sometimes bandits.
it really pays off time/gold/level-wise, try it.
I sell just about everything I get and I rob my friends. I was a Blade and cleaned Cloud Ruler Temple out of house and home. Those Katana's were worth a lot of money.
You do what you have to do to survive and prosper in the game. Training costs lots of money.
At Level-1 I was the hero of Kvatch and went to Oblivion. Already caved dived by then. With that said I prefer to play for fun so I play EASY MODE. Believe me even at EASY you can still die.
At Level-17 I am the Hero of Cyrodiil and Commander of the Nine. Playing EASY mode is more fun.
At low levels take everything you can see in the world, go to a merchant, buy only low cost materials, make every potion you can (price is not defined by the potion type) and sell.
At higher level you could forget to get everything in the world, just buy nearly everything (check the sell price before buying) from the merchant, make potions and sell.
Remember to upgrade when possible at least Mortar and Pestle, that affect the price.
As a bonus, you can keep the potions you need (and I used quite a huge number of restore potions)
