Countersign/Key to Dagon Shrine

Hi folks. I know I'm presuming on your good nature, having just recently asked a quesiton about unclimbable hills, but I've another question, and I hope you won't mind too much.
I'm doing the Dagon Shrine quest in the Main Quest. So....How/where do I get either the countersign or the key to get into the shrine? I've tried talking to the doorkeeper; he just says "Dawn in breaking," and I can't get anything else out of him - and I don't have the "countersign". I've tried killing the doorkeeper, but he doesn't have any key on him. What am I missing?

How did you find the Shrine? Did you go through the book quest with Baurus? If you read the books/found the map marker, you should have the response in the dialog options.

I did, indeed go through the quest with Baurus, and killed the "Sponsor". I then got the solution from the University (though I had figured it out myself, of course). Still, when I got to the doorkeeper, all he says is "Dawn is breaking." <Sigh> And when I killed the doorkeeper, he has no key on his body. Don't know what I've done wrong - or didn't do that I should have. Thanks for your response, in any case. Folks on here are really quite nice, and very eager to be helpful. I appreciate that.

Then it sounds like a game bug, but nothing I have heard of before. You are not supposed to kill him until he becomes hostile, unless you do want to join the Dark Brotherhood. Check out the uesp wiki. There is a way to set/rest quest stages.
PS I assume you did see the glowing map at the end of the 'books' quest?
