Getting Really Frustrated
I'm hoping somebody can help me. I love Oblivion, *BUT*...I'm getting so frustrated in one area that it's making me want to scrap the game. I'm talking about unclimbable hills. For example, how is one supposed to reach Boethia's shrine? I've approached the Valus Mountains from every direction. I get close enough to *see* the thing on my "compass" but can't reach it; and there are other, similar places. Somebody very kindly suggested one can make it on horseback, but...it doesn't work. I'd very much appreciate any help anybody can give me - before I punch a hole in my monitor screen. Thanks, folks, for whatever help you can give me.

have you tried jumping repeatedly? rapid, constant jumping at the right angle is good for climbing

Try to climb on grass. Also jump with horse.

I'd suggest you try climbing the mountain all the way north-east or from the south-east. From there you can easily follow the path on the mountain and decend to the shrine.

These places that seem inaccessable often only have one path to reach them. You just have to keep trying. If all else fails, try the tcl console command.

sadly there's no map of trails, you can get to these places but it usually involves going up and along a different hill, sometimes if you have Acrobatics of 50 you can try barrelrolling up in certain places,or you can try the coc command http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Daedric_Shrines

I feel your pain. In fact, I've coined a phrase just for this aspect of Oblivion. I call it "topographic fascism". You'll get used to it though. Sometimes zig-zagging up a slope works, sometimes not. In general, look for greenness and avoid the rocky looking stuff. Sometimes a gully can show you the right way. Sometimes you need to go down to go up. Craziness. Stay persistent. Boethia's quest is well worth it, just make sure you've met the level requirement!

This is one of my biggest complaints about the game. Every where HAS to be a F*ing maze! I noticed this with Morrowind, that the interiors of all buildings had you navigate a maze to get to the person you want. But Oblivion is worse. The entire world is filled with places you want to go/can see on your map but there is a 'maze' of cliffs in the way. Grrrrrr. You have to go a mile down this way in order to double back and get to the site. Boethia's shrine is the very worst. I solved it by going uphill at every chance I got, starting back at Cheydinhal. Going south esat and always climbing, I was able to get above the shrine, then drop down to it. Standing at the shrine I still see no other way to get to it.
Sometimes I will just cheat. Use the console (type `) then tcl. Then just 'fly' to where you want to go and enter tcl again to cancel.

If you're trying to climb a mountain and it's so bad that you want to quit the game, just use the damn tcl command.

grass

Use a horse. Horses are like injected with spider-mans powers. if the slope is less than like 80 degrees the horse'll walk up it xD

Sorry, I don't know what the tcl command is; I'm not much of a computer guy. If you can tell me what that is, I'll use it, with gratitude. Thanks.

OK. Then google for Oblivion console commands. That will get you all the info you need.
Also, the uesp wiki is very, very good and has more Elder Scrolls info than you will ever need.

press the tilde key (~) the squiggly line, and it will open a menu. type tcl and then you can essentially fly through anything. Once you get to where you want to be, type tcl again to disable it and walk on the ground normally again.
