The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

This game is too hard
I just installed Oblivion and created my character and looked forward to making a stealth mage archer. But I just keep on dying in the first area at the prison. Rats are pwning me so much and I do so little damage.

I cranked the difficulty to max since the slider was quite confusing and I thought "sure, why not?". But now the game is literally unplayable. I have been able to progress a bit by crouching all the time and abusing doors to run away after shooting my arrow or casting my flare.

Should I reduce the difficulty in the beginning of the game and increase it later, or should I just keep the difficulty at max and continue plowing through?

No, it's for people that like using no other skills than Conjuration.

Oblivion on max difficulty is just impossible, unless you train conjuration and let your minions deal with the enemy because your character is a total wimp.

But if you want a good challenge without changing the slider in-game then install oscuros oblivion overhaul mod. And keep the slider on 50% ( you deal 1x and the enemy deals 1x damage to you )
makes the game more like morrowind, rather than the lazy difficulty slider where you take like 6x more dmg from enemies.

I mean its just dum that a stupid sewer rat takes like 1/6 dmg from your attacks but the rat deals 6x dmg to you.

and people say morrowind was hard.

this game is like the failed abortion offspring of morrowind and skyrim.

Morrowind - My skill is 100 with long blades. I hit my enemy than miss and again and again, Game is using ancient combat mechanics.

I'm lvl 3 I have it on 75 pct difficulty and can't kill a Ringleader in one of the mines...however if I turn the slider down to 50 pct I can completely pwn him with Shocking Grasp, blocking, and slashing.

The games difficulity is Fubar due to how leveling works and you can never figure out how strong your guy really is.

Like I don't know if I should go somewhere else and fight him later or if it will matter since if I level the Bandit Ringleaders too. I'm trying to play without moving the difficulty slider around keep it at 75pct for the whole game.
Just bring up the console and type Kill all or click on the enemies then kill or tgm or tcl.

I suggest playing at 50% - right in the middle, where most people probably start. As others have said, playing that combo is going to be difficult, especially early in the game when you aren't much stronger than a baby. Wait until level 15 or so to play on maximum, even then, you are going to get you ass kicked once in a while. :)
Ogres.....even at lvl 50 they give me problems,i think Oblivion's armour values work differently.Light armor/heavy armour in Skyrim makes no differerence, while in Oblivion you better have 50 in Athletics if wearing light armour

Light armor is 2/3 as effective as heavy armor, but there's a perk at 100 that closes the gap.

Skyrim's about the same, but it appears otherwise because smithing is broken.

I reckon max difficulty when basing on rats with no teeth can chomp on rocks then spits it out on you like flying boulders causes more damage than you wielding the broadsword of the gods + whatever else of the gods is simply stupid. I prefer medium setting for this game.

But I play all of my games on max difficulty.
Then don't complain if it's actually hard :claugh:

I just use a flame spell on rats. I can usually kill them before they get close. Even in the dungeon before you exit to the sewer.

Your spell effectivness increases in relation to your armor proficiency in Oblivion. I've never paid attention to those stats in Skyrim.
