The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

This game is too hard
I just installed Oblivion and created my character and looked forward to making a stealth mage archer. But I just keep on dying in the first area at the prison. Rats are pwning me so much and I do so little damage.

I cranked the difficulty to max since the slider was quite confusing and I thought "sure, why not?". But now the game is literally unplayable. I have been able to progress a bit by crouching all the time and abusing doors to run away after shooting my arrow or casting my flare.

Should I reduce the difficulty in the beginning of the game and increase it later, or should I just keep the difficulty at max and continue plowing through?

The difficulty slider has all the subtlety of the face customization slider. Do not adjust it out of the 45% - 55% range or you will witness ungodly abominations of mathematics that human minds were never meant to perceive.

I'm gonna be honest. I thought this was a troll thread until I saw that you were actually serious.

And funniest thing is, that it is coming from DS player.

Dark Souls isn't hard. You beat it first time and then you are pretty much a veteran at that point. It doesn't take a genius to play DS2 or DS3 after playing DS3.

Oblivion's difficulty slider isn't hard, it's tedious. You can break a daedric sword on a goblin shaman without killing it at just 70%. The only thing that works is spamming summons to distract the enemy long enough to stack weakness effects on them.

OP is talking about tutorial

Max diff isn't even difficult, it's just stupid. It shouldn't take 300 hits to kill a rat.

Just download a mod that doubles damage for enemies and the player. That way, you die as fast as you would on the hardest, and you kill like you're on easy. It's more fun that way.

All the slider does is reduce your damage and increase their health. You arent better because you play max, you're just wasting more time and making the combat extremely spongey and awful. Put the slider at the middle or maybe a bit above that and download some realistic combat mods.

The rats are easy once you get blocking and blade/blunt up by just a couple of points... wait until you leave the sewer and a mudcrab one shots you.

This is not completely accurate, Max difficulty bar = Mobs do 6x damage to player. Difficulty bar 75 percent of the way to the right = 3.5x damage to player.

Hmm first two Rats are very hard to kill if you try MAX difficulty.
We all know that if he/she try it.

Max difficulty in Oblivion means that you do less damage to enemies while enemies do more damage to you and have more health. That's it. There is literally no point in playing Oblivion at max difficulty, unless you want to make it a chore and abuse alchemy/enchanting to be able to preogress at all.
Default difficulty is very good! It will be pretty easy at the beginning and will give you some challenge later on especially if you are not warrior type class. Fire atronachs will tear you apart. Wisps will be a problem as soon as you'll meet them. All other enemies will level up with you and become much stronger foes even at lower difficulty.
