Can't seem to kill without the guards knowing about it.

I hope this forum is still populated. I never played much of Oblivion, but recently I've gone back to it and enjoyed it a lot. I really want to do the Dark Brotherhood questline cuz I never did it before. But for some reason, when I kill someone in total stealth, with no one else in the area and in one hit, guards still go after me and arrest me.
It makes this quest line impossible, unless I want to keep paying out tonnes of money. Is this just how it is? In Skyrim if no one saw you do it you didn't get a bounty. Is that just not in this game? I think it may be a bug or something.

You have to be specially careful in Oblivion. What is your sneak skill? If you run around noisely in homes, the guards will know. Sneaking helps to keep them unaware.

My sneak is 60 something, 90+ with the Grey Fox hood. And before you ask if the reason I'm getting arrested by guards is that I still have that hood on, I always take it off in towns.

kills of people must be done in one blow. go into sneak and break out the bow and apply poison, enchanted bows are best. so whilst in sneak mode, using the echanted bow that is also poisoned, while being undetected shoot the arrow and kill the person in one hit and make sure no one see it happen.
just read you saying you kill'em in one hit so you are bugged or someone is seeing you. one hit kills with no witnesses and no guards should come. what is your bounty level before and then after the kill?
also join the thieves guild as fines are cut in half when paying through thieves guild.

yeah, I know you said you killed them in one hit which is why I pointed that out in my comment. you don't seem to have a bounty if you are part of the thieves guild and they wont let you pay your fines that way. like I stated you are bugged. your game seems to be bugged. you have not stated what the bounty is before and after the killing of the people. it tells you this in game. most like it is just a bug you are experiencing. unless you can provide more details I doubt anyone will be able to help out. I see two options. option 1 is keep playing the game as is with this characer and hopefully it works its self out or someone comes up with an idea. option 2 is start a new character and hopefully it resolves the issue you are having. in my thousands of hours on xbox 360, drm free pc disc and steam versions of this game I have never encoutered what you are stating. unsubbing as I can't help you out.

are you full blown vampire? full blown vampires get attacked no matter what unless you cast a charm and entrall someone. perhaps you are a vampire and don't know it? this is my last attempt at tryiing to figure it out. you may not have any bounties at all or you don't have enough gold to pay bounties to the thieves guild. they will only work out you problems on your own if you don't have enough to pay bounty off. check your vampirism level and if you are then go suck some blood and try it again. if your talking to people normally the vampirism isn't too bad though.

If you use Darnified UI or HUD Status Bars Enhanced (HSBE) you can see how much light there is on you and if you are being watched. In HSBE there are several times I have red symbol due to either my summons being registered to see me in sneak mode or that there are some animal around. Without HSBE I wouldn't know when and why things happen or have to toggle to journal each time to see active spell effects, so I would recommend to look up HSBE on Nexus site.

You are probably not aware that also animals can report you if you do something illegal and that is one reason why you get attention from guards when you get nearby those on thre road or cities.

In Wrye Bash (it is a mod manager with several other benefits) you can create Bashed Patch where you will be able to tweak some settings, one setting is to disable this feature (it is called "responsibility" in game) and you will have more freedom to get on with your buisness. No responsible animals that walk all miles just to tell towns guards you nicked some coins of some poor guy or girl.

It is also possible to use console and commands to change Responisility, but is something you have to play around without yourself.

The playerbase seems split between "the guards are all psychic" and "the guards are all asleep" experiences. Getting used to how stealth works in this game takes a lot of practice.

I once had a high Sneak character kill Ida Vlinorman in Talos Plaza in broad daylight and nobody noticed. Sadly, I wanted to get caught, since I planned to exploit the jail skill penalties...
