Why is Elder scrolls IV called Oblivion ?
Why is Elder scrolls IV called Oblivion when it takes place in Cyrodiil, because Elder scrolls III and V were named after the place they were played in.

Because the entire plotline is about Oblivion (hell).

They probably thought Oblivion sounded cooler.

Sounds better than Cyrodiil and the plane of Oblivion invading is the major event of the game.

because it allowed them to do this :

OBL(IV)ION

which looks cool

The ultimate objective is to stop an invasion from another plane of existence. The name of that plane is Oblivion.

Because, all Daedric Princes exist in places called "Planes of Oblivion" and the story of this game revolves around one of the Daedric Prince's Oblivion Plane.

Oblivious sounded too obvious. But Oblivion describes your state of mind while playing, as you discover you played till sunrise. My dogs thought their name was dammit, as in 'dammit leave me alone!' I force myself to take breaks now and spend more time with them. Especially after I found all their pizza boxes and beer cans.

The Shivering Isles are another plane of Oblivion, this game actually takes you to Oblivion, that's why it's called Oblivion. lol

Cyrodiil doesn't have same punch as Morrowind or Skyrim when it comes to name. For example name Valenwood also doesn't have that fantasy/mysterious feel to it so i doubt game that would take place in there would be called after it either. Probably same reason why second game is called Dagerfall instead of High Rock. Just from a linguistic and marketing point, Elder Scrolls Oblivion sounds more attractive than Elder Scrolls Cyrodiil.

"Say goodbye to all this..."

(Goodbye, all this!)

"...and hello, to OBLIVION!"

(Hi, Oblivion! How's the wife and kids?)
